Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow to work with Dr. Laura Shapiro, Dr. Jessie Ricketts (Royal Holloway, University of London) and Professor Adrian Burgess on a Nuffield Foundation funded project to examine how reading ability and reading practice influence vocabulary growth.

The successful applicant will help to train and supervise a team of Research Assistants in collecting data from children participating in the Aston Literacy Project (a large longitudinal study of reading from school-entry to late-primary) during the transition to secondary school. They will also help to train and supervise Research Assistants in conducting an intervention study to test ways to increase reading practice. They will contribute to data analysis and dissemination and be mentored in conducting statistical modelling of longitudinal data, and in disseminating our findings to academics, teachers and policymakers. They will be based at Aston University but some of the work will be conducted at Royal Holloway, University of London, so they would need to be willing to travel to attend team meetings, and help supervise Research Assistants based there.

Applicants should have a PhD in developmental psychology (or closely related discipline), experience of conducting research in school settings, the ability to manage Research Assistants, an aptitude for advanced statistics and an interest in learning new statistical techniques (e.g., Structural Equation Modelling).

A clear, enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required for the successful applicant.

Informal enquiries should be made initially to Dr. Laura Shapiro (Tel 0121 204 4052; email l.r.shapiro@aston.ac.uk ).
