Commencing in 2018, the Social and Global Studies Centre brings together the work of RMIT's Centre for Global Research and Centre for Applied Social Research. The research of this newly formed research centre will be focused on the analysis of the transformation of societies across the globe in areas including: migration, mobility and social diversity; conflict, peace-building and security; humanitarianism, development and governance; gender, violence and inequality; housing and homelessness; health medicine and society; crime and justice; language, culture and social institutions and, social policy and practice. The Centre will be globally engaged, nationally informed and locally relevant and its work will be grounded in academic, political, policy and practice debates with direct application to social justice and equity.

The Role and Your Responsibilities

The Director, Social and Global Studies Centre will have a key role in shaping the new research centre. This exciting opportunity will involve working with staff to build performance and outcomes in applied research in social sciences and humanities disciplines and promote the work of the centre to industry and the community. The Director will also be responsible for fostering research communities of practice, including HDR candidates, and facilitating engagement and collaboration with external partners and across programs and disciplines to deliver research excellence and impact.

Skills & Experience

The successful applicant will have the ability to develop, lead and deliver major research initiatives and have a significant research track record in a relevant area. Strong leadership skills and experience in managing teams and projects in a collegiate environment are essential. You will have strong industry networks and relationships and detailed knowledge of current industry trends. Your ability to communicate, negotiate and build relationships with senior executives and external bodies along with your experience in financial, governance and quality management systems within a university will be key to your success in this role. A PhD in a relevant discipline is mandatory.
