This Teaching Academic position is primarily focussed on the preparation and delivery of teaching activities within the School’s undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs. This position will contribute to the development of curricula and will utilise professional/discipline-related expertise to deliver high-quality teaching across the disciplines of bioscience applied to human health, including physiology. The Lecturer is responsible for carrying out a range of activities to develop and maintain scholarly expertise related to the disciplines.

The Division of Health Sciences consists of three schools and two research institutes: the School of Health Sciences, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, and the Centre for Cancer Biology and the Sansom Institute for Health Research. Each school offers modern, innovative and accessible bachelor and postgraduate programs, including research and doctorate degrees. The Sansom Institute for Health Research is UniSA’s premier health and biomedical research concentration, bringing together leading scientists to find solutions to some of the big health care challenges of the 21st century.

The School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences focuses on applied research and professional education, enriched by the professional knowledge of its staff, state-of-the-art facilities, and strong partnerships with industry, community, and professional bodies.

In addition to purpose-built laboratory facilities to service the School’s pharmacy, pharmaceutical science, laboratory medicine and nutrition programs, the School’s research laboratories provide researchers with access to cutting-edge facilities. The School also has research concentrations in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Science and Chemistry; Medical and Biological Sciences; and Nutrition and Food Sciences.


This position reports to the Head of School: Pharmacy and Medical Sciences. This position works closely with the Associate Head of School: Academic.

  1. Design and implement learning activities including lectures, tutorials, assessment and provide timely feedback to students.
  2. Adopt appropriate teaching approaches (including face-to-face, online and blended learning) to promote student learning.
  3. Contribute to the design and development of engaging course curricula and materials, and ensure that teaching is informed by relevant research in the field.
  4. Undertake teaching as part of the teaching team, including co-ordinating moderation of marking exercises.
  5.  Act as a student advisor by providing academic counselling, mentoring and advice to students.
  6. Undertake course coordination role and/or provide leadership to other academic staff at level A and B within the teaching team.
  7. Support the professional development of colleagues through involvement in peer review of teaching.
  8. Undertake administrative functions connected to courses taught and actively participate in meetings and committees at the program, School and Division level.
  9. Contribute to School, Division and University activities, particularly in relation to planning and administration.
  10. Demonstrate a commitment to community engagement and be active in raising the profile of the discipline.
  11. Undertake developmental activities to maintain currency with the profession/discipline.
  12. Participate in relevant workshops, teacher development programs, and undertake other professional development activities to develop teaching and learning knowledge.
  13. Reflect on personal teaching practice, seek feedback (from students, peers and supervisor), and implement strategies to improve practice.

The responsibilities as specified above may be altered in accordance with the changing requirements of the position.

  • Pursuant to the Children's Protection Act 1993 (SA), this position has been deemed prescribed. It is an inherent requirement of the position that the staff member maintains a current Criminal History Assessment determining them fit to work with children.

  1. A doctoral qualification in Biological or Biomedical Sciences, or a Masters in a relevant discipline, or professional / industry experience.
  2. Demonstrated ability to undertake teaching duties including the design and preparation of teaching activities and resources.
  3. Understanding and experience in using a range of contemporary teaching methodologies.
  4. Demonstrated competence in using the necessary digital techniques required for effective curriculum delivery.
  5. High level administrative and organisational skills.
  6. High level written and oral communication skills including demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with team members, external parties and colleagues.
  7. Demonstrsated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to teaching through continual development and improving performance.


  1. An emerging record of contribution to teaching and scholarship.

Eligibility of appointment is restricted to persons who:

  • Have had casual academic employment experience within the past twelve (12) months plus no continuing employment within UniSA during the previous three (3) years; or
  • Have other relevant work experience for the work activity to be undertaken; or
  • Are enrolled as a student and the work required is generally related to the degree course being undertaken.
