The University of Bristol has been awarded two UKRI Innovation / Rutherford Fund Health Data Science Fellowships and are now recruiting to appoint high calibre fellows (one early career and one mid-career) to these positions with a start date of February 15th 2018. HDR UK will be a national, interdisciplinary research institute that will develop the capacity and methods to accelerate the pace and scale of health and biomedical data science to deliver a step change in UK capabilities. These fellowships will be based at the University of Bristol, linked to the Population Health Science Institute and will map to areas of research strength in health data science at this institution. These areas of strength are;

  • Causal analysis methods for translational health benefit
  • Record and data linkage and mining to predict clinical outcomes
  • Developing, promoting and evaluating new digital health technologies to improve quality of care

These Fellowships will also need to align to the aims of the UK’s Industrial Strategy, and develop talented research leaders that can underpin future industry growth and productivity, within the context of HDR UK’s strategic priorities.

1. Candidates will need to seek line manager approval to apply given the imminent start date of 15th February 2018, which is not negotiable (and may therefore require a short notice period to be agreed).

2. Candidates need to submit the following in Arial 11pt to by 18th December 2017; 

  • CV (2 pages using MRC template)
  • Project plan (1000 words including objectives, research questions to be addressed, and fit to HDR UK strategic priorities)
  • Training plan (1-page maximum)
  • List of publications (with short narrative of • Letter of support from fellowship sponsor. 

3. Confirmation by current line manager of approval to apply and availability to start on 15th Feb 2018 (statement can be included in letter of support from sponsor if they are also the current line manager). Shortlisting will take place w/c 18th December with shortlisted candidates invited for interview on 8th January 2018. If you submit an application please keep this date free. The interview is expected to last for approximately 20 minutes. Applicants will be expected to speak for no more than three minutes on what this fellowship opportunity will mean for their career. 

4. The two successful fellows will subsequently need to submit the following information to the MRC on JeS by the 25th January 2018 deadline;

  • CV (2 pages using MRC template)
  • Objectives (4000 characters), Project summary (4000 characters), technical summary (2000 characters), project costings (having consulted with Account Manager in Finance)
  • Training plan (1-page maximum)
