About the job

Swinburne University of Technology has an ambitious goal of growth in research performance and impact, as set out in its 2020 Research and Innovation Strategy. As part of this agenda, the university has plans to double its research income by 2020. In order to support these objectives, Swinburne seeks an experienced research management professional to drive and support operational performance in research funding and contracts administration.

In this newly created role, you will have broad leadership responsibility and oversight of pre-award and post-award grants management and contract administration within Swinburne Research. Supporting our three Faculties, you will lead a team of research management professionals (~4-6FTE). You will be responsible for team leadership, including planning, supporting, encouraging and developing team members; coordination and allocation of tasks; implementing efficient and effective systems for grants and contracts administration, ensuring and promoting a culture of continuous improvement; policy development; sponsor liaison; and compliance monitoring.

Key to your success in this role, will be your ability to engage effectively with research sponsors, and build close working relationships with colleagues in other areas of Swinburne Research, particularly in Research Development and other support services including the Legal Office, Finance, People and Culture, and colleagues in research support positions in academic Departments, Centres and Institutes.

About you

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification or an undergraduate degree with extensive research management experience, education or training.
  • Demonstrated experience in proactively managing major grant funding schemes (e.g. Australian Research Council) or similar competitive programs with the goal of submitting high quality, competitive applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a leader of a professional team, exercising formal and informal leadership as appropriate on major change initiatives, including workflow planning and staff supervision and performance development, in a busy environment.
