This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop Biomedical Services at the University of Edinburgh, which has one of the most extensive biomedical research programmes in the UK. You will be responsible for the provision of high quality, multi-species facilities and technical and veterinary services as well as ensuring that the University is compliant with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) and all other relevant legislation. You will have significant responsibility for animal welfare, ensuring engagement with the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) and a Culture of Care in all facilities.

Accountable to the Establishment Licence Holder, you will provide strategic leadership to support current and future research needs with responsibility for business planning, stakeholder management and financial oversight. At a time of significant estate development and departmental restructuring you will take a lead in planning of new facilities and lead staff through this time of change to ensure a satisfying and positive working environment. You will have a key role in the administration of ASPA, engaging closely with academic staff and the Home Office and continuing to develop the University’s engagement with the Concordat for Openness in animal research. 

The successful applicant, preferably professionally qualified with a background in biomedical science, will have significant experience at senior management level in the laboratory animal sector with a range of species. They will have experience in strategic planning and finance and in the management and design of facilities along with a detailed understanding of working under ASPA within a busy academic or commercial environment. Excellent communication and leadership skills are vital along with vision for animal welfare and the 3Rs that will assist the University in achieving its goal of being an international leader in this area.
