The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients and improving medical education and practise in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups.

The Education and Standards Directorate is responsible for two of the GMC’s key statutory functions; setting the standards for doctors, and overseeing undergraduate and postgraduate medical training across the UK.  Leading the Directorate’s operational team, the Assistant Director will deliver coherent and efficient operational processes across the function. This will include developing operational processes for new initiatives such as the review of quality assurance and the introduction of credentialing across all four countries of the UK and across the GMC.

This is an exciting opportunity; a chance to innovate and guarantee the GMC has systems which ensure decisions prioritise public protection and are sound, transparent and accountable. With a successful and strong track record of delivering operations in a senior role within a challenging regulatory, political or similar environment; you will have an appreciation of the frameworks the GMC operates within. Able to establish credibility quickly, you will know what it takes to improve business processes as well as provide the solutions to complex problems involving a host of stakeholders.

Your outstanding interpersonal skills, together with your personal presence and influencing skills to engage effectively with our many and varied stakeholders will be apparent. Leading a highly skilled team, you will build on their strengths and empower them; this combined with your pragmatic approach and determination to get things done will make a positive contribution to the GMC’s work now and for the future.
