Postdoc position in Microbial Molecular Biology
A postdoc position is available at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science. The position is financed by the Research Council of Norway and the appointment has duration of 3 years. The Postdoc position is part of the project C1Pro – Microbial conversion of C1 to value-added products by integrated systems and synthetic biology (2018 – 2020). This project is funded within ERACoBioTech, which is an ERA-Net co fund Action under Horizon 2020 aiming to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in Biotechnology. NTNU (Brautaset) is the C1Pro project coordinator and the project has totally six partners from four European countries – as a postdoc you will be involved in the transnational collaboration of this consortium.
Information about the department
The current research fields at the Department include synthetic biology, systems biology, recombinant expression, biopolymer engineering, analysis and control of microbial systems, and food chemistry. Further information is available at https://www.ntnu.edu/ibt.
The focus of research for the offered position will lie within molecular biology, including metabolic engineering, and synthetic and systems biology with the overall aim to understand and construct microbial cell factories. This includes:
- design and expression of genes and pathways in the heterologous host (i.e. transcription and translation regulation, protein stability, enzyme kinetics; genetic engineering);
- analysis of functionality of synthetic pathway in the host metabolic network (i.e. energy and reducing power balance, metabolite and precursor pools, export capacity, toxic intermediates; systems biology);
- characterization of genetically engineered strains (i.e. fed batch fermentations, product quantification with standard analytics methods, HPLC).
The host bacterium is the Gram-positive methylotrophic bacterium Bacillus methanolicus, which has proven to be a promising candidate for production of amino acids and their derivatives from methanol. The postdoc will specifically focus on establishment and analysis of B. methanolicus production strains and development of genetic tools.
We are seeking a person with good understanding of the above-mentioned fields and disciplines, and who enjoys planning and executing laboratory work.
A successful applicant is highly competent, independent and at the same time a team player, and a highly motivated and ambitious person. The applicant should hold good grades and must have a PhD within molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or biology. Experience in fields related to the project such analytical chemistry (HPLC and GC/MS), fermentations, and bioinformatics is regarded an advantage. The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should enjoy interdisciplinary research and take interest in learning and working in teams. The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Terms of employment
The appointment of the Postdoc position will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.
The position as Postdoc is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
Applications with CV (that has all necessary information about education, scientific work and previous work experience), certificates from both Bachelor and Master, possible publications and other scientific works the applicant wants to be considered, copies of transcripts, (copies of documentation on English language proficiency test) and reference letters should be submitted. Together with the application we request a 1 page “Personal Motivation Letter” including a discussion of research interests and experience in molecular biology of the applicant.
Applications must be submitted electronically through www.jobbnorge.no.
Applications submitted elsewhere will not be considered.
The reference number of the position is: NV-122/17
Application deadline: 10.01.2018
