Job Description


The BU Initiative on Cities (IOC) seeks a full-time Program Manager to spearhead the launch of Boston University’s Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities (EPIC) program. The program, which exists at more than 20 other universities across the U.S., is a model for sourcing and embedding real-world, city-specific projects in undergraduate and graduate classes.

The Program Manager will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the program, both internally and externally, with the support and direction of a Faculty Director and the IOC team. Responsibilities include identifying one or multiple cities in Massachusetts to serve as clients, identifying classes and liaising with faculty to ensure projects fit pedagogical goals, shaping class projects, coordinating field trips and related events, managing budgets, fees and timelines, maintaining relevant external communication channels (e.g. web, social media, marketing collateral) and ensuring final project deliverables produced by students are provided on time and within scope.

As the Boston University program is launched, the Program Manager – together with the Faculty Director - is expected to serve as an internal champion for the program, explaining its benefits and impact to faculty, students, and staff at the university. The Program Manager will also help to recruit potential municipal partners and maintain relationships with municipal officials. She/he will be expected to serve as the main conduit between the municipal partner and stakeholders at Boston University. The Program Manager will establish and oversee the annual application and selection process for potential municipal partners.

The Program Manager will also be responsible for managing the program’s budget, associated project fees, and daily operations, and may participate in or lead grant-writing as needed. She/he will recruit and oversee a small team of undergraduate and graduate student staff to support the activities of the program. This is a staff position.

About the Initiative on Cities

The Boston University Initiative on Cities (IOC) was co-founded in 2014 by the City of Boston’s longest-serving mayor, Tom Menino, and BU Professor of Political Science, Graham Wilson. We are a cross-university research initiative that seeks to bridge the divide between urban scholarly research and local governance, both domestically and internationally. We work with a wide breadth of academic disciplines at BU, including political science, environmental science, computer science, public health, social work, engineering, sociology and others in order to apply academic talent and tools to solve pressing urban issues.

The Initiative also conducts research and forges strategic external partnerships at the local, national and international level, and leads an annual survey of American mayors, the Menino Survey of Mayors. We convene multi-stakeholder conferences, host on-campus seminars, and lead an executive education program on urban governance and power. The Initiative also nurtures student passion for local government through our fellowships that embed BU undergraduate and graduate students in mayors’ offices in the U.S. and abroad.

Required Skills

The ideal applicant will have:

  • At least 3 years of professional experience and a Bachelor's Degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Ability to travel throughout MA for in person meetings with cities, potential project site inspections and other face to face interactions required
  • Experience in education/higher learning preferred
  • Experience building/launching new programs preferred
  • Rigorous project, financial management and administrative experience
  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Experience establishing new projects and forging new relationships
  • Experience working with or in government preferred
  • Public relations and event planning
