The Faculty of Science has embarked on an ambitious programme of recruitment to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and is looking for a series of Research Directors to lead its research to meet the University’s vision to be first in Hong Kong, leading in Asia, and competitive globally.

The Faculty of Science is one of the larger faculties in HKU with about 130 academic staff in five departments (Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics and Actuarial Science) and one school (Biological Sciences) and an off-site marine facility, The Swire Institute of Marine Science. The Faculty provides a supportive and friendly environment and is embarking on a programme of recruitment to invest in areas of acknowledged strength and to invest in areas of internationally competitive activity. To better support research, the Faculty has established a new research division structure and is looking for a Directors for their research division and for an interdisciplinary institute – The Swire Institute of Marine Science (SWIMS):

Director in the Research Division of Molecular and Cell Biology 

The Research Division of Molecular and Cell Biology has research strengths in cell biology, endocrinology and plant sciences. Its key expertise lies in bioinformatics, molecular biology, bioactive peptides and genetics; and important facilities such as both greenhouse and animal house. 

Applicants should be an outstanding researcher, with an exceptional record of research outputs, funding and student supervision. They should have demonstrated strong research leadership and commitment to helping others to develop their research.

The successful candidate will be appointed as Professor in the Department/School of the Faculty and will concurrently hold the Directorship in the respective Research Division/Institute. They will be considered for direct tenure subject to approval.

Internationally competitive start-up packages are available for the successful candidates. A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience will be offered. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as leave, and medical benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
