Academic tutors for the Residential College are usually interviewed and hired in February – March and July – August of each year. However, expressions of interest are welcome at any time, and your application will be placed on file until there is a vacancy.

Trinity provides tutorials (groups) and supervisions (individual), for subjects at the University of Melbourne in which students are enrolled. Tutorials typically run from week 3 to SWOT vac, Monday-Thursday and Sunday, at 5.30, 7.30 and 8.30pm. A tutorial timetable is set up by the Head of Academic Programs working with students and tutors.

The College tutorial system is an established feature of the academic programs of the colleges and Halls of Residence affiliated with the University. College tutorials serve four primary functions:

  • to help students understand subject material and to clarify important or difficult concepts
  • to help students broaden their perspective on subject materials
  • to provide a tutor-led common interest group for a subject in which students can gain support and discuss issues relevant to a subject
  • to help in special circumstances such as a lack of basic study skills, note taking, lack of background information, language difficulties etc.

College tutors should not be attempting to ‘re‐teach’ the subject; rather, they will respond to issues raised by students about the materials, and offer further intellectual challenges.

Tutorials are taught by senior students and graduates who have demonstrated academic excellence in their own studies. Tutors should be both teachers and models, encouraging independent learning, critical enquiry and peer discussion.

The tutorials we run are requested by student and attendance at tutorials is voluntary. Tutorials may be altered or cancelled to meet student needs. Academic tutors are paid $86.19/hr for a tutorial and $43.10/hr for a consult. They are welcome to dine at High Table in hall on nights that they teach, and are eligible to join the Senior Common Room.

If you are interested in tutoring at Trinity, please send to Dr Gayle Allan, Deputy Dean
