There is a temporary position available at the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning as Postdoctoral Fellow in the field of childhood and youth studies, for a period of 3 years-, with one year obligation to work. The position as a Postdoctoral Fellow is a fixed -term position with the primary goal of qualifying for work in professional academic chair positions.

The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning (IPL) is a social-science knowledge environment for research, teaching and lecturing. The department contributes research-based knowledge about early development, school, education and working life in a lifelong learning perspective. The department’s subject areas are pedagogy, adult learning, counselling science, interdisciplinary child research and university pedagogy. The scientific staff at the department currently consists of 16 professors, 24 associate professors, eight university lecturers, three researcher positions, two post-doctors and ten PhD candidates.

The Department undertakes research and research based teaching at all levels (BA, MA and PhD). At present fields of education, adult learning and childhood studies.


The postdoctoral candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary research area on gender, generation and mobility. The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the Departments’ academic group on "Life course mobilities" contributing insights into the full cycle of child-youth-adult-migration anchored internationally and in Norway. The candidate undertakes theoretical and empirical analysis on the gender and generational implications of transnational migration. Important themes for potential research include youth livelihoods and mobility; diaspora youth/childhood; migration and social transitions etc. The candidate will be encouraged to undertake high quality, innovative empirical fieldwork and publication. She/he shall also participate in seminars and publications of joint articles.


The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning would like to strengthen research on children’s and young people’s life worlds in the global south. Applicants with research background on issues of gender, generation and social reproduction are encouraged to apply for this position. Prior research competence and interest in topics like educational migration, immigrant/refugee children and families, young people’s trans-local lives or international female labor migration are useful. Experience in teaching in higher educational institutions is an advantage.

A Norwegian PhD is required in a relevant social science field or an equivalent foreign PhD approved as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD. Fluent English skills are required.

Employment will be activated in accordance to existing regulations of 31.01.2006 with NTNUs supplementary purviews of 17.06.2009.

Personal qualifications will be ascribed high importance.

Joint work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a join piece of work, applicants should enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she contributed to the work.

Salary and Working Conditions

The Postdoctoral Fellow is paid according to salary scale 24 level 57 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 490500 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.
