Postdoctor in Marine System Design for Deep-Sea Mining
A two-year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is available at the Department of Marine Technology (IMT), NTNU. The position is part of the NTNU Oceans Deep-Sea Mining pilot (http://www.ntnu.edu/oceans/deep-sea-mining). NTNU Oceans is one of four strategic research areas at NTNU (www.ntnu.edu/oceans).
As for service and construction vessels in the offshore oil and gas industry, deep sea mining will require vessels with specific functionality to cover the unique and varied needs of the industry, enabling high operability throughout the year, provide a safe, sustainable and effective work platform for required operations, without unnecessary functionality leading to a cost burden. Hence, cost estimation and cost management of the marine system design is important to find sustainable solutions. The research objective of this post-doctoral project is to explore the functional requirements, design space and cost structure of offshore support vessel(s), as part of marine system design for deep sea mining. The marine system design, including the offshore support vessel(s) is a key enabler for deep-sea mining operations as a safe and effective work platform with required functionality to maintain long-term economic viability under varying external conditions. The system design need to balance the technical, operational and commercial aspects, to provide solutions that can cope with changing requirements over time, be a work platform for effective operations and be commercially viable over the lifecycle of the design. Understanding the operational profiles – different types and modes of operation, share of time in each mode, required needs and functionality in each operational mode will be important. Ability to deal with uncertainties in requirements and commercial turmoil, will require a good approach to flexibility and modularization in design. The design must also acknowledge differences in geographic and exploitation requirements for deep-sea mining, with special emphasis on conditional requirements for harsh and Arctic operations. The purpose of the vessel, and its functional requirements may cover a range from type of heavy crane based functionality, to being a mother craft for ROVs and unmanned underwater vehicles performing different deep-sea mining operations. Both the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) side of the vessel and marine system design should be given due consideration. Approaches to both design and verification of the system solutions should be proposed by the applicant, as a basis for discussion and planning of research.
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) degree in marine system design with focus on marine system design under future uncertainty. The candidate should document thorough insight in special vessel design, and related engineering design and engineering analysis.
Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 485,700 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
