Head of Programme, Animation

Royal College of Art

The Royal College of Art is the only entirely postgraduate institution of university status dedicated to research and knowledge exchange, and teaching and practice in art, design, communication, and humanities. Its international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability has been recognised for three successive years by the QS World Ranking survey, with the College as the world's number one art and design university in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In March 2016, the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced an unprecedented £54 million grant to the RCA to support a major expansion of its Battersea South site with the creation of a new flagship £108 million innovation campus. The College is currently located on three sites in central London, in Kensington, Battersea and White City, with some 2,100 students and over 400 staff.

The Animation programme is located in Garden House at the College’s White City campus, and includes a two-year MA alongside research degrees at MRes, MPhil and PhD level that range across the theoretical and practice-led. It is the College’s ambition to build on the programme’s position as the UK’s leading course for innovation and craft in contemporary Animation, evolving the curricula to embrace new modes of production, thinking and delivery, and expanding the intellectual, technological and interdisciplinary bases for Animation practice in the 21st Century.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Communication, the Head of Programme will be responsible for the academic quality and direction, research, teaching and learning, and management of all the resources of the programme and staff teams. S/he will work to ensure that the programme is recognised for its success in research and knowledge exchange as well as innovative learning and, with an outstanding record of achievement, will be able to lead by example. As a member of the School’s Leadership Team, the Head of Programme will also work to increase collaboration within the School and across the College, making a contribution at an institutional level, as well as continuing to attract and support the highest quality students in line with the College’s plans for growth.
