Job Outline:

To provide a high quality, friendly, well organised and professional service within the gym and health and fitness area of the Department of Sport at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), ensuring the safe and efficient use of facilities in an inspiring and motivating environment.

To support the delivery of the Vision for Sport to deliver an outstanding student sport, health and fitness offer to enhance the campus experience for all students and staff at UNNC.  To deliver classes within the health and fitness programme.



  • Hold an internationally recognised fitness instructor qualification e.g. NVQ Level 2 Gym Instruction;
  • Willing to become first aid qualified if not already;
  • Evidence of educational competence eg GCSE Maths and English Grade C or accepted international equivalent standards;
  • Willing to undertake relevant training as required;
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English;
  • Ability to teach an exercise class;
  • Ability to relate well to students, staff, public and other members regardless of age, gender and physical ability;
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Effective verbal communication skills including telephone skills;
  • Ability to strike up rapport and interact with members;
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills;
  • Ability to work within a team;
  • A strong ability to work using one’s own initiative;
  • Highly motivated and driven;
  • Experience of working in a gym or Fitness Centre delivering inductions and fitness programs;
  • Experience of working in a customer led, service environment;
  • Knowledge of the fitness industry;
  • Knowledge of safe procedures in a fitness facility;
  • Experience of delivering a sport or fitness class;
  • A willingness to work evenings and weekends as the role demands.


  • Qualifications in: First aid, Indoor cycling, Exercise to music, Qualified to teach other fitness classes, Strength and conditioning / sports performance, Manual handling certificate, NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification);
  • Ability to use Leisure Management software;
  • Good IT skills;
  • Good knowledge of basic maintenance e.g. tool use and repair techniques;
  • Basic Web site editing;
  • Ability to produce basic marketing materials;
  • Experience of using Leisure Management systems;
  • Experience of cash handling & use of the till;
  • Experience of reception work;
  • Experience in organising sporting events or competitions;
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance of health and fitness equipment;
  • Knowledge of opening and closing procedures;
  • Knowledge of Health and safety in the workplace.

Main Duties and Responsibilities


  • To timely and efficient setup and dismantling of equipment relating to health and fitness suite activities;
  • To maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene at all times within the gym, via the scheduled cleaning programme;
  • To support the delivery of the planned and preventative maintenance programme via regular inspections of the gym, recording results, and resolving maintenance and cleanliness issues where possible, reporting faults to appropriate colleagues in accordance with departmental procedures and conducting basic maintenance tasks;
  • To provide 1st aid where required and ensure the reporting of incidents and near misses is carried out in accordance with University and departmental Policy, liaising with the sports centre management team where appropriate;
  • To act in accordance with the fitness suite normal operating procedures, risk assessments, emergency action plan and departmental procedures at all times;
  • To attend team meetings as required;
  • To ensure the security of the sport centres and fitness suite via opening, locking-up and alarming where required and in accordance with departmental procedures;

Service Delivery and customer admissions:

  • To perform new member gym inductions and explain and demonstrate the need for correct training techniques and practices;
  • To provide up to date, knowledge based guidance and advice to members. To write personal fitness programs taking into consideration their aims and objectives. To review fitness programs on an ongoing basis;
  • To be in the fitness areas at all times, when not scheduled to conduct a class, interacting and helping members, ensuring safe and effective practice in the gym areas and to monitor fitness suite users;
  • To take a proactive role in membership retention activities including performing telephone calls to low users and booking program reviews etc.;
  • To track the progress and attendance of members to ensure that they are getting the best out of their membership;
  • To organise and promote events and challenges for members;
  • To assist in membership sales and promotions as required;
  • To promote the health and fitness programme and other sport and recreational opportunities available to students, staff and the wider community in a proactive and friendly manner;
  • To deliver classes within the health and fitness programme, contributing to the development of new activities to keep the programme up to date with needs and interests of students and staff;
  • To act as the first point of contact with respect to enquires made at the health and fitness reception in the form of telephone calls, face to face contact and email;
  • To maintain customer confidence and service standards via ensuring prompt responses to enquiries and resolution of problems arising in accordance with departmental policies and procedures;
  • To greet customers into the gym on arrival, providing information relevant to their activity and directing them to appropriate areas;
  • To operate the computerised booking system, in order to admit customers to their desired activity; checking membership eligibility;
  • To assist with the effective delivery of student and sporting events, ensuring client needs are assessed and met;
  • To accept, record and process payment for activities, courses and events via use of the departmental computerised booking system, and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures;
  • To assist with the reconciliation of all monies at the close of each shift, check and verify floats and monies stored on site, ensuring security and traceability of cash takings;
  • To proactively promote the University Of Nottingham Ningbo Sport, health and fitness membership scheme (once set up) to students, staff and the wider community, advising prospective customers and encouraging sales;
  • To act in accordance with the departmental customer service policies and practices at all times;

Additional duties

  • To assist with the delivery of departmental and University wide events, for example, Introduction week, open days and other recruitment activities, offering support to students and the wider community and assisting delivery where required;
  • To support the delivery of events, projects and programmes as required in liaison with the Health and Fitness Manager;
  • To exhibit a flexible approach to work, providing additional cover in cases of sickness, annual leave or special events;
  • To undertake other duties and activities that may be necessary from time to time in accordance with the needs of the department;
  • Keep up to date with professional knowledge and skills through participation in training and development activities.
