The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine is an internationally recognised provider of world-class education and research. The research-intensive Faculty has a gross budget of almost $300 million, employs approximately 1000 continuing and fixed-term staff (headcount), has a community of more than 4000 non-salaried academic appointees and around 3200 students (headcount).
The Faculty of Medicine offers Australia’s largest medical degree program for graduates and school-leavers. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Health Sciences, E-Health, Mental Health, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health.
The Faculty possesses enormous strengths spanning research, teaching, industry engagement and clinical practice in disciplines ranging from the basic sciences, biomedical research and development, to clinical trials and public health. Research projects within the Faculty have already led to discoveries with far-reaching social and economic impacts, including the revolutionary Gardasil (TM) vaccine for cervical cancer (Professor Ian Frazer) and a drug discovery EMA401 (Professor Maree Smith), a first-in-class oral treatment for chronic pain which through Spinafex Pharmaceuticals led to Australia’s largest biotechnology commercialisation deal. Faculty staff include three highly cited authors, one Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), three Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) and 12 Fellows of the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS). The Faculty is a core member of Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners, the Brisbane-wide academic health science system.
Educational offerings in biomedical sciences, medicine and public health are informed and supported by research activity across a range of fundamental and clinical areas of importance including recognised strengths in cancer, skin diseases, brain and mental health, maternal and child health and genomics. Cutting-edge facilities such as the Herston Imaging Research Facility (HIRF), the UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), our laboratories in the Translational Research Institute (TRI) and the new Centre for Children’s Health Research (CCHR) enable outstanding research outcomes and sharpen our understanding of cancer, autoimmunity, mental disorders, infectious diseases and neurological disease.

The Centre for Online Health (COH)
This PhD will be hosted by the Centre for Online Health (COH), which is a part of the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Queensland. Since 1999, the COH has been recognised internationally for its role in research, service delivery and education and training in the fields of telemedicine, telehealth and e-Healthcare. The COH's multidisciplinary team of clinicians, academic researchers, educators, technicians, engineers and administrators brings together a broad mix of skills.
The centre's keys areas of activity are:
- Clinically focussed research with an emphasis on examining the feasibility, efficacy, clinical effectiveness and economics of telehealth and telemedicine in a variety of settings.
- Academic and vocational education and training in e-Healthcare and clinical telehealth.
- As a service provider of clinical telemedicine services.
These three synergistic activities provide a unique environment in which telemedicine within the modern health service may be explored and understood.
Together with three other UQ research centres (the Centre for Research in Geriatric Medicine, Dermatology Research Centre and the Telerehabilitation Research Unit), COH was awarded a NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Telehealth in 2013. The current position will join a substantial team of researchers and students associated with the CRE. The CRE offers an extensive program to support personal development of research students and junior post-doctoral researchers.

Expressions of interest are invited from outstanding graduates in health-related fields who have relevant experience and are highly motivated to join the dynamic research group at COH and undertake a full-time PhD project to advance our understandings of how to support cancer survivors using telehealth.
This position is based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Woolloongabba QLD.
Cancer survivors require ongoing care, support and monitoring after treatment completion. Survivorship care is increasingly delivered using information and communication technologies (known as telehealth) by a multidisciplinary workforce, however the preparedness of the workforce, and the suitability of different models of care, is unclear. Telehealth may be particularly beneficial as a mode of survivorship care delivery for survivors in regional and rural areas, whose care is shared across providers in primary, secondary and tertiary care across locations.
As part of the formal application process to UQ, the student will work with the relevant Supervisors, to articulate a research question within the scope of this topic.
Applicants must comply with the relevant entry requirements for PhD admission at The University of Queensland, including English language proficiency, and demonstrate excellent capacity and potential for research. Demonstration of research ability through publication output in peer-reviewed international journals is also desirable.
Specific selection criteria:
- Applicants should possess a Bachelor (H1 or H2A) or a Masters Degree in a health-related field (e.g. health science, allied health, medicine, nursing).
- Applicants must be willing to apply for a scholarship package (assistance will be given with this).
- Demonstrated knowledge in some or all of the following areas:
- Cancer survivorship
- Telehealth and/or e-health
- Models of care
- Patient outcomes
- Applicants MUST be Australian citizens.
- Applicants must be able to enroll full-time in the PhD program (to commence mid-late 2017).
- Excellent communication skills in English.
- Evidence of contribution to research, such as publication of papers or other academic output.
- Ability to work independently, self-reliance and motivation.
- Initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and an ability to think laterally.
- Demonstrated organisational ability and good record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
The PhD scholarship includes a living allowance of $26,682 per annum (2017 rate), indexed annually. The scholarship will be awarded for 3 years.
