Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies science to support the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. CEMML provides technical support, conducts and applies research, and offers career development and other learning opportunities to support resource stewardship and align with the mission of the college and university.

Position Summary

This position will lead CEMML’s cultural resources technical program in a scientific, administrative, and supervisory capacity and contribute to the unit’s strategic development and financial sustainability. CEMML facilitates cultural resources management for the Department of Defense and other diverse agencies and organizations. Service, research, and education related to cultural resources management requires expertise in topics including but not limited to anthropology and archaeology. Leadership of such programs also requires expertise in management, including but not limited to supervision and mentoring of senior and junior staff, financial tracking, and reporting.

Required Job Qualifications

  • An MA/MS in anthropology, archaeology, architectural history, historic preservation, or a similar field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of practical experience with cultural resource management.
  • Experience in or good knowledge of tribal consultation.
  • Expertise in compliance with U.S. regulations related to prehistoric and historic cultural resources.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Expertise in federal contracting and the financial and other administrative aspects of program and project management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Must meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology and Historic Preservation as codified in 36 CFR Part 61:
  • The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • A PhD in anthropology, archaeology, architectural history, historic preservation, or a similar field, or JD in environmental law with specialization in historic preservation and cultural property law.
  • Previous experience with management of cultural resources, including cultural artifacts and historic buildings and structures, on Department of Defense and other public lands.
  • Experience working with Native American nations and tribal lands.
  • Experience with online learning curricula and instruction.

Develop and direct service, research, and education in a manner consistent with the missions of CEMML, the Warner College of Natural Resources, and CSU. Collaborate with other senior and junior staff within CEMML, the Warner College of Natural Resources, and other CSU units to ensure that the program contributes to meetings the goals of all units and that projects meet their objectives.

Execute service, research and educational projects; collect, manage, and analyze data; prepare reports and other project deliverables consistent with contractual obligations; and ensure transparent and appropriate use of funds. Apply scientific methods; communicate study designs and results in writing and orally; and project and track project finances to meet contractual obligations.

Supervise senior and junior staff, including instruction and mentoring, to ensure that project teams meet contractual obligations and to support career development. Train personnel to handle additional responsibilities and advance their professional objectives.

Seek and obtain extramural funds to support service, research, and educational projects or programs consistent with the missions of CEMML, the Warner College of Natural Resources, and CSU. Develop proposals and associated budgets to support and complement existing projects and programs and to build relationships within and beyond CSU.
