Applications are invited for the following joint position in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts, with Education as the tenure home, to commence on September 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal, and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

The Faculty of Education is ranked number 4 among the top Education faculties worldwide by the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for Education 2018.  The Faculty of Education invites applications for an appointment as tenure-track Assistant Professor in Chinese Education and Culture in a Globalized World. The aim of the position would be to affirm and strengthen our identity ‘as a nexus for the exchange and development of research that draws on the best of Asian (especially Chinese) and Western scholarship’.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese Language Education, Cultural Studies, or in the related field.  They should have demonstrated interest and expertise in Chinese Language Education and China Studies in a Globalized World, and have a strong commitment to Knowledge Exchange/community engagement. The appointee would be expected to make substantial contributions in both teaching and research, building on expertise within the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts, rethinking the evolution of Chinese educational traditions and especially their relationship with Western learning, and seeking to understand the most important lessons that traditional Chinese educational thought and practice have for contemporary development. As part of the cross-faculty initiative, the appointee will be expected to work with colleagues in both faculties (i) to develop an interdisciplinary research in Chinese Language Education and China Studies; (ii) contribute to the teaching of undergraduate (including Common Core Curriculum) and taught postgraduate programmes; (iii) supervise student projects and theses; and (vi) take up administrative duties as required.  The appointee will also be expected to teach in two or more of the following areas: Chinese Literature and Culture, Chinese Language Education, and Teaching Chinese Language and Literature in International Education.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, as well as annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.  Information about the Faculty can be obtained at http://www.hku.hk/education.
