Job Description

The Boston University Department of Biomedical Engineering (BU BME) anticipates openings for multiple tenure-track faculty positions, pending approval by the Provost. Although candidates in all research areas will be considered, we are interested in faculty that synergize with and build bridges between existing areas of strength, including Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Imaging and Optics, Biomechanics and Mechanobiology, Computational Bioengineering, Nanotechnology and Sensing, Molecular and Cellular Engineering, Neural Engineering, and Synthetic and Systems Biology.

BU BME is a top-ranked department. We attract exceptional graduate student and faculty talent at all levels and have strong ties to the BU School of Medicine, as well as other top medical research centers in the Boston area. Research activity by primary faculty is approximately $30M per year. Four of our faculty lead a new NSF Engineering Research Center with the goal of developing personalized, functional heart tissue. Through the generosity of alumnus Rajen Kilachand, Boston University has established a $100M endowment specifically to fund research at the interface of life sciences and engineering. Our faculty benefit from strong infrastructure, nurtured by funding from the Coulter Foundation, to translate research advances into new applications that impact society. BU BME faculty lead and participate in several high-profile, interdisciplinary research centers, including BUNano, the Center for Biological Design, the Center for Future Technologies in Cancer Care, the Neurophotonics Center, the Systems Neuroscience Center, the Center for Research in Sensory Communication and Neural Technology, our renowned Photonics Center, and the Hariri Center for Computing and Computer Engineering. We have particular interest in building already-strong interactions with the Division of Materials Science, the Engineering Research Center, and the Graduate Program in Neuroscience.

Boston University is an AAU institution with a rich tradition dedicated to inclusion and social justice. We are proud that we were the first American university to award a PhD to a woman and that Martin Luther King Jr. received his PhD here. We are dedicated to increasing the participation of all talented students and are committed to the pursuit of engineering by underrepresented groups at BU and beyond.

Required Skills

Candidates must hold a PhD in an appropriate area, have postdoctoral experience, and show potential for leading an independent, vibrant, world-class research program. BU BME also places high value on excellence in teaching and in community.
