Cranfield University is a wholly postgraduate institution, with a distinctive mission to deliver outstanding transformational research that meets the needs of business, government and wider society. The Cranfield Research and Innovation Office supports the development of academic-commercial relationships through collaborative research support, connecting researchers with potential business partners, and the preparation of strategic industrial funding bids.

The ERDF Business Engagement Officer post is an exciting opportunity to take a lead role in developing relationships with SMEs based in the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) area. This post will help increase the University’s levels of knowledge exchange and impact.    Working closely and collaboratively with the ERDF Programme Manager and academics the post holder will assist the strategic development and delivery of IMAGE project activities, identifying and promoting key capabilities to external organisations as well as maximising the effectiveness of Cranfield University in contributing to regional growth. Sitting within the IMAGE Project Team, the role will be the first point of contact for the SMEs liaising with the IMAGE project and the main interface between businesses and academics.

You will be playing an important role in contributing to Cranfield’s mission as being “Close to Business’ and in the development of our regional business support activities. You will develop a new database of SMEs based in SEMLEP and related to Cranfield University’s thematic strengths, build a strong local project pipeline and support project delivery. With experience of building credible relationships with businesses, you will have a proven ability to identify innovative SMEs and income opportunities and be able to take those opportunities from initial idea through to projects. Using strong interpersonal skills, you will identify, develop and maintain external engagement opportunities between businesses and academia and effectively manage these relationships.

You will have proven and demonstrable experience of working effectively with academics and business; contributing to the marketing and business development planning process. This customer-facing role requires excellent communication skills and prior experience of presenting at external events and working collaboratively. Experience of working on European funded programmes, particularly ERDF, within a HE environment is advantageous.  Education to degree level (or equivalent) is essential and Postgraduate qualification in a technical subject would be advantageous.
This newly established role is part of a wider strategic initiative within Cranfield to develop deeper, sustained relationships with SMEs in SEMLEP. You will be joining a successful and growing team, working with a diverse range of Industry focused themes and academics. This position offers an exciting opportunity for the right individual to shape the role, developing the remit alongside the distinctive expertise of the university, producing innovative new technologies and products in partnership with industry, and delivering transformative impact.
