The DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING (ESE) at WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS invites applications and nominations for the tenured position of Professor and Department Chair. The Department has a unique and long tradition of excellence in advancing basic science and solving engineering problems relevant to society. We are committed to providing high-quality education and research with focus on applied physics, devices and circuits, systems science, and signals and imaging.  Our faculty lead national and international research teams (including the Multi-University Research Initiative, or MURI) and collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects at Washington University in St. Louis.

The department has 16 tenure-line faculty members; undergraduate enrollment is 279 students and the graduate enrollment is 273.  With $2.6 million in research expenditures from agencies such as NSF, NIH, AFOSR, and ONR, one-third of the department’s faculty have received the prestigious NSF CAREER Award.

The ideal applicant will have developed a thriving independent research program, led multi-investigator projects, participated in the development of novel curricula, and have a record of academic and professional leadership.  Excellent organizational and communication skills are also required.

Serving as the executive officer of the department, the Department Chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Engineering & Applied Science.  The Department Chair is expected to serve for a minimum initial term of 5 years with the opportunity for reappointment.  The Department Chair is expected to provide leadership in all matters of department policy, including appointments, promotions, instruction, research and administration and will conduct research, publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, teach relevant courses, advise students, and participate in University service.
