The University of Queensland is a world class institution which ranks in the world’s top universities, as measured by several key independent rankings, including the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (41), the US News Best Global Universities Rankings (52), QS World University Rankings (47), Academic Ranking of World Universities (55), and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (65). UQ secured a greater share of Australian Research Council grants in 2016 than any other university nationally. The University’s Life Sciences broad subject field ranking in the Academic Ranking of World Universities was the highest in Australia at 20.

UQ’s School of Economics ranks in the top 2% of research-intensive economics departments in the world and is one of the leading groups in Australia.

The Head of School role calls for an accomplished and experienced leader with the ability to engage and motivate staff within a successful school. A strong sense of purpose and direction will be key in maintaining the School’s strong research performance whilst further developing the School’s contribution and engagement with key University initiatives, with particular focus on student experience and collaborative, strategic partnerships.

The successful candidate should have the ability to lead a program of innovative, high quality teaching and implement the University’s student strategy. A strong and active research program in any field of economics coupled with the ability to foster and further develop a strong research culture within the School will be equally important. The successful candidate will also require an external orientation, with the capability to further develop international links and progress the School’s advancement program.
