There is a temporary position available at NTNU Sustainability as a PhD Candidate in Political Science for a period of 3 years (one year of additional funding can be applied for, which will then include 25% compulsory work over the resulting 4 year period). This is an educational position which will provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development leading up to a PhD degree.

Information about the Department

The candidate will join the exciting and growing Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU. The department has a wide range of research areas such as sociology, political science, sports science, media, communications and information technology. The department currently has around 70 employees; 27 professors and 12 associate professors in permanent positions.

NTNU Sustainability is the university’s strategic programme for contributing science based knowledge on environmental sustainability to decision-making processes in politics, business and society at large. The successful candidate will join the Department of Sociology and Political Science, which studies governance, institutions, state behavior and public policy issues pertaining to a sustainable development. The candidate will have a main supervisor from Political Science and a co-supervisor from one of NTNU Sustainability’s other partners, such as the Centre for Sustainable Energy Studies (CenSES) or the Programme for Industrial Ecology (IndEcol). Applicants should submit a preliminary research project proposal that contributes to NTNU Sustainability’s efforts on the politics of climate change mitigation and adaptation. It should focus on the governance and politics of achieving the so-called 1.5° C target and thematically address one of the following three topics: Structural energy transitions; the prospects for achieving net negative emissions; international and transnational finance for climate change adaptation in a global perspective. The submitted project proposal should be no longer than 2500 words and include a presentation of the chosen topic, research question(s), theoretical and methodological approaches, empirical scope and selected literature references.

Qualifications

Employment will be activated in accordance with existing regulations of 31.01.06. The requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree in political science, international relations, public administration, environmental politics, development studies or equivalent. Applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (corresponding to 120 ECTS credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

Fluent English skills are required and proficiency in a Scandinavian language will be considered an asset.

Personal qualifications such as the ability to perform independent work, cooperate with others, problem solving skills, creativity, and motivation to apply for the position, will be ascribed high importance.

Salary and Working Conditions

The PhD position is paid according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, minimum gross NOK 436 500 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.
