Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:   

Performs laboratory experiments in support of research projects investigating arboviral pathogenesis in mosquitoes, cells and small animal models. Works both as part of the lab team and independently to advance our project goals. Keeps accurate records of procedures. Manages the lab with respect to ordering, inventory, budgeting, organization and cleanliness. The selected individual will have the opportunity to be involved in all stages of research in the lab, and included in publications and presentations. A three-year commitment is expected.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters degree in microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, tropical medicine, or related discipline
  • Molecular biology and infectious disease laboratory experience
  • Experience with mosquito rearing and dissection
  • Experience with cell culture and cell-based assays
  • Attention to detail and careful record-keeping
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Analytical skills to resolve problems using scientific and technical principles

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY: 

  1. Mosquito breeding, manipulation and dissection
  2. Cell culture techniques
  3. Mosquito and cell virus infections
  4. Molecular biology techniques (Pcr, qPCR, cloning)
  5. Protein production
  6. Western blotting and ELISAs
  7. Small animal infections and dissection
  8. Record keeping/laboratory notebook documentation skills
