Description of Work Unit

Work Unit
The Electronic Shop provides monitoring, installation, repair, maintenance and replacement services on the campus wide electrical utility metering, primary distribution and the secondary electrical associated with the campus facilities. Major building components affected are; heating, ventilation, cooling, refrigeration, fire alarm, keyless access, security, lighting controls, motor controls. Inspects repairs and maintains the campus exterior and interior lighting control systems.

Position Summary

The Electronics Specialist II provides installation, repair, replacement and maintenance services on the primary and secondary electrical distribution associated with Colorado State University facilities. Inspects, repairs and maintains the campus exterior and interior lighting systems and lighting controls. Provides installation, repair, replacement and maintenance of electric motors. Provides operation, repair and maintenance on all emergency generators.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of progressive experience troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, removing and replacing controls and control circuits for lighting.



Preferred Qualifications

The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:

  • Current State of Colorado Journeyman Electrical License.
  • Experience with local lighting controls, building lighting controls and associated components: lighting sensors, relays, lighting control panels, networked lighting controls.
  • Experience with electrical utilities.
  • Knowledge of Building Automation Control Systems with the ability to install, maintain, diagnose, and repair.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated prioritization and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely (verbal and written).
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category Electronic Automation Design and Sequencing Duty/Responsibility

  • Design and perform sequencing of new building automation and control systems and components to include: programming/scheduling of operational parameters of equipment (eg: lighting control systems), Variable Frequency Drives, Switch-Gear equipment, as well as Standby Generation and UPS equipment interconnections with primary sources.
  • Develop, administer, and document regulatory requirements required by Facilities.
  • Provide construction test/verification and commissioning services.
  • Work closely with external and internal customers to provide support and insight on new projects to avoid design, install, software, networking, and/or naming inconsistencies.
  • Implement building automation documentation procedures that support the validation of research facilities, labs, and campus buildings or projects.
  • Perform work on all 13.2 KV system and related equipment which includes new installation, alterations, maintenance, and work necessary to keep systems operating properly.

Percentage Of Time 30% Job Duty Category Programming/Analysis Duty/Responsibility

  • Provide high-level technical advice, analysis, and programming assistance to energy services to internal and external customers.
  • Design and apply alternate control sequence specifically for the purpose of energy savings.
  • Provide integration assistance with third party equipment and software malfunctions as a means of data collection and control associated with energy savings opportunities.
  • Perform work on the campus electrical systems and their components, which includes: new installations, alterations, maintenance to keep critical and non-critical electrical systems operating properly.

Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Controls Integration Duty/Responsibility

  • Integrate and install controls for heating, ventilation, and air cooling systems.
  • Support equipment sequencing and alarming.
  • Troubleshoot software and programming logic associated with building automation components, seek out and use all resources to problem solve. If necessary, reach out to tech support and/or customer service support.
  • Maintain and repair secondary electrical and control circuits, systems and equipment in campus facilities under the responsibility of CSU Facilities.

  • Diagnose all types of control issues associated with electrical equipment as needed.
  • Provide training on systems and components – digital and electrical.
  • Help resolve troublesome problems.
  • Design and perform repairs on existing systems and equipment.
  • Design new and/or update sequences for new or existing lighting control systems.
  • Work closely with internal and external customers to provide support and insight on new projects to avoid design, install, software, networking, and naming issues.
  • Write and or advise on programming and hardware installations on new projects.
  • Integrate new projects with building automation systems.
  • Review drawings, update inventory on parts and equipment, and provide support in design and construction projects and outages.

Percentage Of Time 10% Job Duty Category Digital Control Installation/Diagnosis Duty/Responsibility

  • Install and programs standard digital control systems for monitoring and control of university and auxiliary building electrical equipment.
  • Diagnose all types of control components and/or system problems on an as needed basis.
  • Provide training to other staff on systems and components, digital and electrical.
  • Help resolve troublesome problems related to electrical systems and controls.
  • Perform audits on building electrical systems and inspections on new electrical installations.

  • Install and remodel existing campus electrical equipment and systems upon request from external departments.
  • Provide detailed estimates prior to work being approved.
