Professor and Head of Biological Sciences, Suzhou, China

Our client, XJTLU, is the largest international joint venture university in China. Strategically located in the Science and Education Innovation District of Suzhou Industrial Park, home to one-fifth of the world’s Fortune 500 companies, giving them unrivalled business connections and opportunities for industry collaboration in one of the most vibrant centres of business activity worldwide.

Established with an intake of just 160 students, and less than 200 staff, now in their 10-year anniversary, and already recognised globally in world rankings, they number nearly 10,000 students and over 1,000 staff coming from 50 different countries, and will be growing to 17,000 students and over 1,600 staff.

Being a game changer in the field of Higher Education in China, and with their vision to become a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognised internationally for its unique features in learning and teaching, research, social service, and education management; they are seeking a Professor and Head of Biological Science to lead a department of dynamic and highly international academic staff.

The Department of Biological Sciences is a successful and well respected department within the University.  Although only established in 2008, it is already a leading centre of excellence in China encouraging creativity, uniqueness, and diversity. They have a highly international department with academic staff originating from 9 different countries, who have previously worked or trained in leading universities and research institutes around the world, including Amsterdam, Cambridge, the Francis Crick Institute London, Edinburgh, Harvard, Geneva, Imperial College, Institute of Microbiology (Chinese Academy of Sciences) Beijing, Max-Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, MIT, Nagoya, Nanyang Technological University, NIMR Mill Hill, National University of Singapore, Oxford, Stanford, UCL and Yale.

The Department currently has 17 academic staff and 9 technical staff members with research interests supported by custom-designed laboratories well-equipped for both teaching and research.

Their undergraduate degree programme in Biological Sciences is the first in the world to receive international accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology and is officially recognised by the Department of Education and supported by the government, meaning funding is not an issue. They have very good staff student ratio of around 1:8, allowing good teaching support.
The Department of Biological Sciences operates in a rich and diverse bioscience ecosystem that combines a strong demand for bio scientists with major opportunities for collaborative research. It is close to BioBay, a national biotechnology hub with over 400 companies, and Cold Spring Harbour Asia, which hosts high-calibre scientific symposia and conferences with internationally-renowned researchers. It has strong links with Suzhou Institute of Systems Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, which is also within walking distance.

As the Head of Biological Sciences, you will plan and deliver the Department’s strategic aims and objectives, overseeing all aspects including teaching and learning, and research. You should be a leader who is committed to working in China, can demonstrate clear understanding of the role of Academic Department Head, and can lead through positive motivation with authority, integrity and understanding of the University's needs.

You will have oversight of Research directions and for the programmes taught at both Undergraduate and Masters Level (Two degrees at UG level, Biological Science and Bioinformatics; one at Masters level, and MRes).  You will represent your department at university level through annual programme review and 3-year strategic planning.  You will have overall responsibility for staffing, budgeting, both operational and equipment, and deal with external stakeholders including examiners and partners in research.

You need flexibility, energy, commitment to collaboration, and have an enthusiasm for the pace, dynamism and global ambition which characterises a research led university.

In return you will work in a truly international institution that is at the forefront of the latest research in the world, with funding that most universities only dream of in a leading centre of excellence in China that encourages creativity, uniqueness, and diversity.

You will receive an extremely competitive salary package, considerably more than existing education organisations.
