Position overview

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region. 

The Crawford School of Public Policy is one of four Schools within CAP and is one of the world’s leading public policy schools. The Crawford School is home to recognised world-class expertise and experience in economics, political science, environmental management and development, especially in relation to the Asia-Pacific region.

The Development Policy Centre (Devpolicy) is a research centre within the Crawford School. The Centre conducts research and promotes discussion in three key areas: Australian aid effectiveness, the Pacific and Papua New Guinea, and global development policy.

The Development Policy Centre wishes to appoint an outstanding early career researcher with a strong commitment to high-quality, policy-based research. The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent experience in economics, public policy or a related field; knowledge of quantitative research methods; and expertise in fields of study in which the Centre specialises, but in particular, in economic development in and/or labour mobility/migration from the Pacific and Papua New Guinea.

The Development Policy Centre is seeking to strengthen its research on economic development in and labour mobility/migration from the Pacific and PNG through this appointment. The appointee will form part of Devpolicy’s engagement as a consortium member of the DFAT-funded Pacific Research Program, which also includes the Department of Pacific Affairs (formerly the State Society and Governance in Melanesia Program) at ANU and the Lowy Institute for International Affairs. It is envisaged that research and public outreach on issues of economic importance to the region, including labour mobility, will form a key component of the researcher’s responsibilities.

Applicants are asked to highlight expertise relevant to: economic development in the Pacific and Papua New Guinea; labour mobility and migration; as well to other fields and themes in which the Centre specialises (see devpolicy.anu.edu.au and look for ‘Themes’).

Applicants will be hired as either a Research Fellow or Policy Fellow, based on prior academic and/or public policy experience.
