At an exciting time for the School of Engineering and Applied Science (EAS), we are seeking a Deputy Dean to work closely with the new Executive Dean in managing and building further on the School's reputation of quality innovative teaching and research relevant to industry, business and society.

Aston describes itself as a University for Industry and the Professions and has been the fastest growing University in the UK for the last 4 years. With its 6 academic subject groups and 4 research institutes, the School of Engineering & Applied Science has a reputation for cutting edge research, and focuses on the inter-disciplinary nature of engineering and applied sciences.  An outstanding individual is sought to provide support and innovative leadership and management to the School as its new Deputy Dean. S/he will enhance the School’s reputation for the quality of its teaching, research and integration with business globally.  The post holder will also be a key member of the School’s Executive team and will therefore inform and implement the School’s vision and strategy as a crucial point in Aston’s strategic cycle.

Deputy Dean of EAS is a full-time, senior management role, carrying leadership responsibilities within the School for both academic and administrative staff and processes, for representing the interests of the School across Aston University and to some extent (depending on personal background and interests) for representing the School and Aston University externally. The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and coming revision of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) create the need for strategic action in terms of focus of activity, the opportunities open to staff to progress and the expectations made of them in this progression. These issues will likely be high on the agenda of the incoming Deputy Dean as will our rapidly evolving international initiatives and learning and teaching innovations.

Candidates must, in their prior career, have demonstrated excellence in at least one of: research; learning and teaching; external engagement; must have a high level of competence and understanding in all three and must have made a distinctive mark in an academic institution. They must have good knowledge of national higher education policies and a good understanding of University culture. Because this is a management role at a time of great change in higher education, candidates must demonstrate sound grasp of financial management and budgeting and also of handling culture change.
