Vice-President, Academic and Provost
University of Waterloo

This is a time of reflection and pride for the University of Waterloo, as it celebrates 60 years of academic achievement since its founding in 1957.
Today, Waterloo is Canada’s top innovation university. Its 36,000 students and 4,000 faculty and staff are driven by a commitment to push the boundaries of scholarship and discovery with the goal of having a demonstrable and lasting impact on individuals and society.

The Vice-President, Academic & Provost will be pivotal in the development and execution of a vision that enables the ambitions of Waterloo students, staff, and faculty, and unlocks their potential as scholars, practitioners, and difference-makers – by championing academic innovation and excellence, supporting and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, ensuring the most rewarding and enriching experience for students, securing resources and community support, and creating optimal systems, programs, and platforms.

Working alongside the President as well as with your fellow Vice-Presidents and the Deans group, you will lead the development of a new strategic direction, which will be inspired by a focused, collaborative, and bold academic vision that enriches Waterloo’s unique culture of innovation and its commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity. As the University’s chief operating officer, you will oversee a broad base of administrative, financial, strategic, and planning activities, and have budgetary authority, accountability, and responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the University. You will lead a team that is committed to enhancing the principles of communication, service, and teamwork. You will also play an external role, advocating to all levels of government and supporting Waterloo’s work with local, national, and global communities.

As the ideal candidate, you are an experienced administrator and an established and respected scholar. You have a reputation for providing leadership that is inspiring, bold, deeply committed, balanced, energetic, authentic, highly collaborative, transparent, engaging, supportive, trusted, and team-oriented. You have exercised sound judgment and diplomacy in a complex, decentralized, multi-stakeholder setting – promoting a deep commitment to students, and embodying trust, respect, and partnership. You demonstrate strong financial acumen, negotiation skills, and business and capital planning abilities. You have an understanding of the critical significance of the internationalization and indigenization of university campuses.

Situated on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples, the University of Waterloo respects, appreciates, and encourages diversity. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals including women, members of visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples and persons with (dis)abilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. The University of Waterloo is committed to accessibility for persons with (dis)abilities.
