Dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies

York University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies.

Established in 1959 and now the 3rd largest university in Canada, York University is a globally-recognized research centre committed to academic excellence. It is home to 11 Faculties and 24 research centres, and partners with 280 universities worldwide. York is recognized for its commitment to interdisciplinary knowledge, social justice, equity, access, diversity, and sustainability. To learn more about York University, visit http://www.yorku.ca

Since its creation in 1968, the Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) has established itself as a leader in creating knowledge about challenging environmental problems, and about the theoretical and practical relationships between the natural, social, artistic, and built environments. It was the first, and is still the largest, Faculty for environmental studies in North America, with an international campus in Costa Rica.  The Faculty is recognized for its commitment to social and environmental justice, as well as its interdisciplinary, collaborative approaches. Its programs offer supportive structures for student-centred learning, encourage linkages between theory and practice, and offer opportunities for experiential learning. The Faculty has a full-time complement of 38 faculty members, and engages over 800 students, pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in Environmental Studies.  Faculty governance is highly consultative and participatory, with active involvement in decision-making with students, staff, and faculty. Currently, the Faculty of Environmental Studies and the Department of Geography are considering a merger, which would provide exciting opportunities for innovative program development.

Reporting to the Provost & Vice-President Academic, the Dean is the senior officer of the Faculty and a member of the University’s senior leadership team. Responsible for all aspects of FES’s operations, including budget and fundraising, the new Dean will maintain and enhance strong and productive partnerships with external constituencies—including federal and provincial governments, community groups, industry, and other universities —and will work in partnership with this outstanding Faculty to achieve even greater levels of excellence. The ideal candidate will possess a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, and be appointable at the rank of Full Professor. They will have a proven track record of successful leadership in a university setting, and a demonstrated deep commitment to excellence in research and teaching. They must be a motivated team player and a highly collaborative colleague, committed to promoting social justice and equity, and to working in a democratic and participatory culture. This appointment, which is renewable, is for five years and is expected to commence July 1, 2018 or as mutually agreed.

York University is an Affirmative Action (AA) employer and strongly values diversity, including gender and sexual diversity, within its community.  The Affirmative Action Program, which applies to Aboriginal people, visible minorities, people with disabilities, and women, can be found at
http://yorku.ca/acadjobs or by calling the AA office at 416-736-5713.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents will be given priority.

Consideration of candidates will begin in November 2017. Inquiries or applications should be directed in confidence to yorkenvironment@odgersberndtson.com.
