About the opportunity
Applications are encouraged from suitably qualified persons to join the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics at the University of Sydney as a team leader. The Lambert Initiative was founded in 2015 with a large philanthropic donation from Barry and Joy Lambert and has recently located to modern laboratories within the Brain and Mind Centre. The Lambert Initiative undertakes a wide range of preclinical and clinical studies and has a core mission to develop novel cannabinoid based therapeutics for a range of disease states including epilepsy, cancer, pain and neurological conditions (see www.sydney.edu.au/lambert/).
The team leader in human psychopharmacology will develop, lead and contribute to a wide range of early stage studies in humans involving cannabis and/or cannabis-derived medicines. These studies will probe effects on cognitive function, sleep, driving ability and general health, and also involve appraisal of specific biomarkers and cannabinoid levels in plasma and other biological matrices in collaboration with our analytical chemistry team. A contribution towards larger clinical trials and observational and survey studies of cannabis use in the Australian community will also be expected.
The successful applicant will have an opportunity to grow and supervise their own team of postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate/honours students and to develop their own research agenda with Lambert Initiative and external funding/industry support. The position might particularly suit an ambitious and entrepreneurial early to mid-career researcher with a strong emerging track record in cannabinoid research. A good knowledge of regulatory and ethical aspects of cannabinoid research will be expected as well as knowledge of translational drug discovery processes. A PhD and postdoctoral experience in Pharmacology, Psychopharmacology, Experimental Psychology, Biomedical Science or a related discipline is expected although medically qualified applicants with relevant research experience are also encouraged to apply.
Appointments are nominally at Level C but that appointment at a higher or lower level can be considered according to qualifications and experience of candidates.

- A PhD and postdoctoral experience in Pharmacology, Psychopharmacology, Experimental Psychology, Biomedical Science or a related discipline is expected although medically qualified applicants with relevant research experience are also encouraged to applyProven skills in managing and/or contributing to a small to medium clinically-focused team.
- Substantial postgraduate experience demonstrating the appropriate competencies and skills for a job in a clinical setting.
- Appropriate clinical trials experience and/or human psychopharmacology experience with a sound working knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g. TGA ICH GCP Guidelines).
- Experience in Human Research Ethics Committee submissions.
- A high level of academic leadership, professional standing and technical experience in clinical research, preferably with a focus on cannabinoid therapeutics.
- Strong computing and statistical analysis skills.
- Excellent track record of publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals, preferably in the field of cannabinoid science.
