Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. We employ over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students.

Ranked number one in Australia, the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning was established over a century ago and began its undergraduate Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1919. We have enjoyed a long history of leading the way in the teaching and research of the built and digital environments. The school has four overarching disciplines: Architecture; Design; Urban and Regional Planning and Policy; and Architectural Sciences, each involved in strong inter-disciplinary collaborations with other parts of the University. Part of the school’s strategy is to focus its capacities in order to help address the major policy, design, societal and economic challenges involved in generating appropriate and sustainable built environments.

Over the past eight years, the school has transformed and expanded its education and research activities. The University now seeks to appoint a new Head of School and Dean with the vision, drive and capability to deliver the next stage of the school’s development. We are seeking a leader who can envisage, develop and implement a strategic plan and vision for the next five to ten years with the ability to work in a transformative way with the school’s related professions and research communities.

You will be an outstanding leader and academic with a distinguished research, teaching and industry track record, and will have high-level leadership and management skills, including the ability to effectively manage significant budgets and the full range of people matters. The capacity to think and act strategically and oversee strategy development and implementation is required. Additionally, you will be capable of providing leadership and vision for the academic disciplines of the school, accessing your extensive knowledge and national and international networks in Architecture, Design and Planning.

You will have demonstrated skills in leading a substantial academic community and establishing and sustaining a high achieving, cohesive culture. You must also have the capacity to actively and collaboratively contribute to the work of the University Executive, and other critical University governance groups as required.

Applicants are expected to meet the educational qualifications and track record for appointment at a Professorial level in a discipline relevant to the school.

Term and remuneration

The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package, and will also hold the title of  Professor
