The Department of Medicine is in the St George & Sutherland Clinical, The University of New South Wales is located at St George Hospital. The Professor of Medicine is Professor Emad El-Omar, a gastroenterologist with a longstanding research interest in infection and inflammation and their consequences in a wide variety of disease outcomes including gastrointestinal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He is the director of the Microbiome Research Centre (MRC), a hub of exciting new research that is diverse, collaborative and translational. His group has collaborations nationally and internationally with groups across Europe, North America and Asia.

About the role

  • $90K–96K plus (17% superannuation and leave loading)
  • 3 years Fixed Term
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Bioinformatics) will join a team of clinical and basic scientists studying the role of the microbiome in health and disease and will have an opportunity to contribute to a large number of research projects and develop an outstanding career with opportunities for advanced training and development.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Knowledge in statistical methods in the context of biological systems and proven experience with programming (e.g. R, Python, C++, Perl)
  • Experience with common pipelines for Metagenomics analysis: 16S- QIIME, Mothur, USEARCH
  • Experience in MEtaGenome ANalyze (MEGAN) pipeline, PICRUSt and RNA-Seq bioinformatics tools
  • A PhD in Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biophysics or related discipline
  • High level of interpersonal skills with ability to coordinate work with collaborators from different Universities or Institutes
