DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY (BMB)
The Department is home to over 250 undergraduate majors, 40 graduate students, 30 postdoctoral fellows and research associates, and 16 regular faculty members. The regular faculty currently generates over $5,000,000 per year in total research funding. The faculty is further strengthened by a group of instructors who teach the service courses to non-majors, two active emeritus faculty, seven research faculty, and four joint faculty appointments in Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, and Microbiology/Immunology/Pathology. The Department is a designated CSU Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence. Most of the BMB faculty members participate in one or more of the interdisciplinary graduate programs in Cell and Molecular Biology, Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Neuroscience or Biomedical Engineering. The Department is housed in the Molecular and Radiological Biosciences Building, which it shares with the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences.
The Department houses well-equipped general instrumentation rooms with high speed and ultracentrifuges, a fully equipped Protein Expression and Purification laboratory (http://www.histonesource.com/), and a Baculovirus/insect cell culture/protein expression facility. A GE Typhoon FLA 9500 biomolecular laser scanner, capable of quantitative, high-resolution, visible and infrared fluorescence imaging of multifluorescent-, chemifluorescent-, radioisotope-labeled, and colorimetric samples is available for scanning agarose and polyacrylamide gels, membranes, DIGE gels, phosphorimaging plates, as well as microplates and glass slides. We operate a LiCOR Odyssey CLx infrared imaging system with two-channel IR fluorescence direct detection, high sensitivity, and quantification capability. The system can be used for Western blots, EMSA, protein arrays, In-Cell and On-Cell Westerns, in vivo imaging, colorimetric protein gel imaging, DNA gel imaging, and tissue section analysis. A GE ImageQuant LAS 500 cooled CCD imager for imaging of chemiluminescent Western blots, fluorescent protein and DNA gel stains, and white light imaging of colorimetric stains and markers.
The Department houses a Fluorescence Microscopy/Image Analysis Center (http://www.natsci.colostate.edu/MIN/), which is a branch of the CSU Microscope Imaging Network (MIN), a distributed Foundational Core, directed by a faculty member in Biochemistry. The center houses a spinning disk confocal microscope on an Olympus IX83 fully automated ZDC base, equipped with a phasor photoablation/activation/conversion system for intracellular molecular dynamics and a Nikon Eclipse Ti with Perfect Focus equipped for TIRF (total internal reflection fluorescence) microscopy and super-resolution microscopy (PALM, STORM). Within the MIN in nearby buildings are two Zeiss laser scanning confocal microscopes, and a JEOL1400 TEM (transmission electron microscope) with digital cameras and a tomography stage for imaging biological samples.
For structural and biophysical studies the Department has an in-house X-ray diffraction system, dedicated crystallization room and crystallization robot, as well as a computational/graphics cluster. For solution-state analysis, circular dichroic spectrophotometer, light scattering spectrometer, calorimeter, fluorescence spectrometers, and Beckman XLI analytical ultracentrifuges. In conjunction with the Department of Chemistry, the Department operates a 500 MHz NMR facility and a laser fluorescence lifetime facility. A field emission scanning electron microscope and a JEOL JEM-2100F transmission electron microscope for material science applications, as well as other analytical facilities are available within the Chemistry Central Instrumentation Facility adjacent to our building (http://cif.colostate.edu/). Additional University-sponsored facilities include the Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility (PMF) (http://www.pmf.colostate.edu/), run by a Director and several highly-trained full-time staff members. The PMF offers multiple research support services with a focus on Mass Spectrometry analysis and DNA sequencing. The facility houses two capillary DNA sequencers and several mass spectrometers for electrospray and MALDI applications including: a Bruker Ultraflex MALDI-TOF/TOF, a Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap with nanoLC, two Waters Xevo TQ-S Triple Quadrupole instruments with microscale UPLC, a Waters Xevo G2 TOF with UPLC, a Waters Xevo G2 Q-TOF with UPLC, and two Thermo Scientific GC-MS systems. The University also supports a Biacore molecular interaction analysis platform, GE Typhoon Imager, Affimetrix gene chip array reader, a laser-capture microdissection microscope, and several fluorescence-activated cell sorting/flow cytometers. A Next Generation Sequencing Core has an Illumina NestSeq and an Illumina MiSeq, as well as IonProton and IonTorrent nucleic acid sequencers. Also available are machine shops for fabrication, an electronics shop, and a central animal care facility.
BMB is one of eight Departments within the College of Natural Sciences (CNS). The College is strongly supportive of collaborative research projects between laboratories of faculty members both within, and external to, the Department and College. For example, faculty within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) share many research interests with faculty in BMB, and several faculty have joint appointments with our Department. Many faculty within our department have joint research grants with faculty from CVMBS and many also have collaborative interests with faculty in Biomedical or Chemical and Biological Engineering. Other Laboratories and Centers of interest include: The Prion Research Center (Prion Research at CSU); the Rocky Mountain Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RMRBL), which is part of the Infectious Disease Research Center (IDRC); CSU Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging (Center for Healthy Aging) and the Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute (Translational Medicine CSU). CSU is the home of the Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence (RMRCE) for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research that was established in 2004 by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to facilitate research, product development, and training for emerging infectious diseases and bio-threat agents. The newly constructed Research Innovation Center (RIC) provides a rich and diverse environment promoting opportunities for collaboration between the public and private sector.
RESEARCH AND TEACHING IN NEUROSCIENCES
The Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Neuroscience (MCIN) Program (MCIN) is a special academic unit at Colorado State University, jointly administered by the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences with over 30 participating faculty members from four colleges and eleven different departments. It is also a designated Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence. The program offers a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience with two concentrations: Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience and Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience. Current enrollment is over 250 majors. Undergraduate majors in both Biochemistry and Neuroscience require completion of an undergraduate thesis. The MCIN Program recruits incoming graduate students interested in a neuroscience concentration. Students in this program take a neuroscience core curriculum and perform laboratory rotations in MCIN faculty laboratories prior to picking their mentor and formal degree program. With more than 50 graduate students in the labs of the MCIN faculty, the weekly seminar program is the dynamic core of this 25 year old program. Our students benefit from a truly interdisciplinary approach that fosters a broad perspective of the many facets of neuroscience while ensuring a deep understanding of their chosen major.
THE UNIVERSITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS
As a land-grant institution, Colorado State University (CSU) offers a broad range of instructional programs in the biological, biomedical, veterinary, and agricultural sciences. On campus enrollment totals over 28,300 full-time students, including over 5,000 graduate and professional students and about 2,000 international students from over 90 countries. CSU is located in the city of Fort Collins, 60 miles north of Denver along the beautiful Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The University is the city’s largest employer, giving Fort Collins a University-town atmosphere. Enhanced by relationships with CSU, the city has become a magnet for highly innovative new industries, and is at the forefront of clean and alternative energy technologies, biotechnology, and software/hardware sectors. Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, AMD, Intel, Broadcom Technologies, Advanced Energy, QLT Inc., Otterbox, Waterpik, Woodward Industries, and Anheuser-Busch are some of the major employers in Fort Collins that help drive an environmentally conscious healthy economy. Fort Collins is considered the microbrewery capital of Colorado, home to New Belgium and Odell Breweries, among many others. Fort Collins is also home to the campus of the Natural Resources Research Laboratory, and to Offices of the Colorado Division of Wildlife, U.S.D.A., the National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Forest Service. The Centers for Disease Control Vector-borne Infections Diseases Laboratory is located on the CSU foothills campus, 2.5 miles west of the main campus. Additionally, a large number of biotech and telecommunication firms are located in the Denver-Boulder area south of Fort Collins. The University of Colorado in Boulder, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, and the University of Wyoming in Laramie are all within a 70 mile radius.
Fort Collins is located next to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, nestled along the Cache La Poudre River, the first river in Colorado to be designated a National “Wild and Scenic River.” Fort Collins has a population of over 165,000, and is ranked among the most educated and healthiest cities in the nation. This ranking reflects the highly educated workforce, drawn to Fort Collins by the strong academic environment and the clean and sustainable industries that thrive in the community. The city of Fort Collins is consistently ranked as one of the “Best Places to Live in America,” with nearly 50 similar designations from numerous magazines and polls since 2005 (see: http://www.fcgov.com/visitor/fcfacts.php). A 2010 Gallup Poll ranked Fort Collins as the third best city in the nation for overall well-being. The city of Fort Collins boasts an outstanding public school system and a multitude of cultural activities, including a center for performing arts, a symphony orchestra, repertory theaters, choral society, and a dance company. The historic Old Town district of Fort Collins hosts live music and thriving local dining scene throughout the year. The city maintains several indoor pools, indoor soccer fields, ice arenas, over 600 acres of parks, 30,000 acres of natural areas, and over 20 miles of pedestrian, biking, and hiking trails.
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology seeks applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Applications will be considered from individuals with a strong background and research interest in studying molecular and cellular processes related to neuronal function. The Department has outstanding research programs in areas of molecular, cellular, and structural biology, with a strong core group studying the molecular mechanisms of cellular functions ranging from transcription to cell division. The position is part of a strategic plan designed to further strengthen and expand these areas of excellence, as well as to enhance our interactions within the interdisciplinary program in Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Neurosciences. The research program of strong candidates should complement our current strengths with broad consideration given to the research tools and systems being utilized.
The successful hire is expected to develop or maintain an internationally recognized externally-funded research program with a neurobiology focus, participate in undergraduate and graduate education, and to provide service through Departmental, College, and University committees, as well as external review panels. The position requires a firm commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
The position is a nine-month, tenure-track, academic appointment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Funds are available to provide an appropriate start-up package. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2018.

Required Job Qualifications
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in an appropriate field. Candidates must have postdoctoral experience, a strong record of publications, and evidence of expertise in the broad areas defined above, as demonstrated in part by submission of a future research plan that will be competitive for external funding.
