Description

A two-year postdoctoral position within the research project Wave Loads and Soil Support for Extra Large Monopiles (WAS-XL, NFR project 268182) is available at the Department of Marine Technology, NTNU, with affiliation to the centre of excellence AMOS. The research will be carried out at the Marine Technology Centre in close cooperation with other researchers at NTNU, SINTEF Ocean, and NGI.

As economies of scale push for larger (6-12MW) offshore wind turbines (OWT), larger support structures are needed. For shallow and intermediate water depths

The WAS-XL project proposes to develop 1) validated simplified models for strongly nonlinear irregular wave loads on large diameter monopiles in shallow or intermediate water depths, 2) realistic soil-structure modelling in experimental hydrodynamic testing, 3) verified engineering procedures to predict and quantify cyclic soil degradation combined with pore pressure dissipation during irregular cyclic loading and soil support at partially drained conditions, and 4) rational design methods to predict long-term behavior of the integrated system affecting the assessment of fatigue life time and evaluation of the applicability of methods for extreme value estimation.

The post-doc candidate will be involved in several aspects of the project focusing on hydrodynamics and structural response, including both numerical and experimental work to be carried out at the Marine Technology Centre. Several experimental campaigns will be carried out, including wave kinematics measurements, loads measurement on rigid models, and load and response measurements on a flexible monopile, including both wave and wind loads. Comparison of the obtained results with numerical models, and further development of such models, will be a key aspect of the project.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) degree in marine or civil/coastal engineering (or similar) with focus on hydrodynamic wave-induced loads and structural responses. The candidate should also be familiar with model testing techniques. A short (1-page) summary of relevant experience should be provided.

Excellent English skills, spoken and written, are required. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 485,700 per annum before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.

The Postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for 2 years.
