PhD Candidate in Physical Geography
Field and remote sensing detection of periglacial creep processes
There is a temporary position available at the Department of Geography as PhD Candidate in Physical Geography for a period of 4 years where 3 of the years are for research and 1 year is for teaching and other work for the department. This is an educational position that shall provide promising candidates the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The position is connected to the PhD-program in geography at the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences and the faculty will be the employer.
Currently, the Department employs 9 professors, 7 associate professors, 2 researchers, 2 post doctors and 13 PhD candidates. The Department has defined four strategic areas: Natural hazards and the effects of climate change; Environment, resources and management; Mobility, transnationalism and inequality; and Innovation and regional changes.
The available PhD position will contribute particularly to the department’s strategic area Natural hazards and the effects of climate change, and belongs to the research group ‘Geographies of climate change effects’ at the Department of Geography. The PhD position will contribute to our work on longterm landscape evolution of cold climate regions, especially the topography of southern Norway. The PhD project shall focus on periglacial creep processes (solifluction) across several temporal and spatial scales, using field measurements and remote sensing as tools for mapping periglacial creep landforms and blockfields. Quantification of creep rates/mass fluxes is a key component of the project. Methodologies to be applied include terrestrial laser scanning, Structure-from-motion from terrestrial and drone images, inSAR and the collection of subsurface displacement profiles from field installations. The project might also develop towards landscape evolution modelling, or have a geochronological component through dating of organic horizons, luminescence dating and/or cosmogenic nuclide techniques.
The holder of the position is expected to:
- Contribute to the project ‘Block fields and the origin of high-elevation, low-relief topographic surfaces – TopSurf’ if this is funded.
- Contribute to teaching physical geography courses at the Department.
We seek a dedicated and sociable person who meets the required qualifications for a PhD candidate. Employment will be activated in accordance to existing regulations of 31.01.06. The requirement for the position is a completed Master’s degree in geography, earth sciences, geomatics, physics or related fields, and a documented solid background in geomatics/remote sensing. Applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies, and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree. Fluent English skills are required.
Personal qualifications and motivation to apply for the position, will be ascribed high importance. We expect a candidate who is able to work independently, also with respect to planning and implementation of fieldwork, and is motivated to learn new techniques. Excellent communication skills should be demonstrated. The ability to build a relevant contact network is important.
Salary and Working Conditions
The PhD position is paid according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, minimum gross NOK 436 500 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.
