Election of Principal
St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford
Stipend appropriate to an educational charity, plus pension and benefits
The Governing Body of St Edmund Hall intends to elect a new Principal of the College, to follow Professor Keith Gull CBE FRS, who retires at the end of September 2018. It invites applications from suitably qualified candidates.
The College’s roots are in the 13th Century, making it one of the oldest educational institutions within the University of Oxford. It is a lively, diverse, and friendly place, with an active research profile among its Fellowship and a talented student body.
As Chair of the Governing Body the Principal has overall responsibility for the effective running of the College. As its Head, she or he will promote its best interests; representing it externally, fostering its community life, and playing a key role in development and fundraising.
The successful candidate will bring a distinguished record of achievement in his or her chosen field along with a clear commitment to the academic values that are at the core of the College. Sophisticated leadership and influencing skills are essential, along with the capacity to guide, but not dictate, College ambitions and business according to the will of its Governing Body.
With excellent communications skills and a warm and inclusive manner, the successful candidate will have patience, good humour, and an interest in people. These skills should be combined with energy, financial acumen, and an enthusiasm for fundraising. The Principal will be a visible presence at College, supporting a wide range of social, representational, and managerial activities.
The role of Principal is both challenging and rewarding. It will appeal to anyone interested in student life, who would enjoy heading a respected and historic academic institution in a collegial manner, whilst playing a full part in its community life.
