About the Role
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding candidate as Professor/Associate Professor, Public Health within the School of Psychology and Public Health. This position presents an exciting opportunity to be part of a School which has a strong commitment to improving the health of individuals and of society by building the capacity of practitioners working in a range of areas, to protect and promote health in organisations, workplaces, and local communities.
The University has made several recent investments in the area of Public Health including provision of funding support for key research centres; strategic institutional partnerships in China; and several new academic positions, including a Professor in Health Economics. The appointment of this new leadership position reflects our wish to capitalise on this investment and on our current growth trajectory and strategic plans for the future. As a Professor/Associate Professor, Public Health you will be expected to: conduct and lead innovative and high impact research at an internationally distinguished level and produce high quality publications resulting from that research; design and lead curriculum development and teaching; and contribute to the discipline leadership within the Department of Public Health.
In addition, you will serve as Head of Department of Public Health for the first three years of the appointment. The objectives of the Head of Department position are to: provide academic leadership and management of the Department: monitor and ensure the quality of the student experience; build research excellence; and contribute to shaping the School and College's strategic vision for learning, teaching and research.
As Head you will lead the Department of Public Health and contribute as a strong, visionary leader to strengthen and direct our commitment to public health. The Department encompasses a number of sub disciplines and of critical importance will be the ability to work closely with the discipline leads and professors in the provision of leadership across the key areas of learning and teaching, curriculum, research, and community relations and development. Allied to this is the requirement to ensure that our focus on the student experience and their changing expectations are reflected in our provision of programs at all levels.
The ideal candidate will have a strong reputation in Public Health, particularly in the area(s) of health policy, global health and health promotion, and a capacity to deliver academic leadership, high impact research and teaching, and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of stakeholder needs, with a proven track record of excellence in working with internal and external partners.
As the Head of Department you will demonstrate the ability to combine academic excellence within your chosen field with the ability to guide and develop academic staff, and influence across a wide range of intra-School disciplines, facilitating positive engagement with other disciplines, the profession and industry partners in relation to both teaching and research.
You will possess:
- A PhD or equivalent accreditation recognised by the University/profession in a field relevant to the Department.
- Distinguished record of original, innovative and internationally recognised research and/or teaching, with evidence of its impact and significance.
- Demonstrated effective leadership and management experience in curriculum development and teaching.
- Ability to lead teams and promote a collaborative and collegial culture.

Level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Associate Professor (Level D) full-time position $133,847 - $147,459 + 17% superannuation | Professor (Level E) full-time position $172,416 + 17% superannuation. In addition, the Head of Department position will attract a responsibility loading.
The University also offers a generous research start-up funding package, subject to negotiation and an agreed research plan.
