Associate Professor of the Practice of Visual Journalism
The Department of Journalism at Boston University seeks applications for an Associate Professor of the Practice of Visual Journalism. This is a full-time, non- tenured position with an expected start date of July 1, 2018. The initial appointment will be made for three years with the possibility of renewal depending on accomplishments.
The Associate Professor of the Practice of Visual Journalism will provide instruction and mentorship in creating audiovisual narratives conceived, produced, designed and distributed across platforms. The incumbent will train students in producing photo and video content guided by standards of professional reporting and will be able to teach reporting regardless of platform. In addition, the incumbent also will be expected to provide service as a member of the faculty, to participate in governance, to provide leadership within the visual journalism instructional team, and to continue to produce independent professional work of her/his own.
Established in 1947, the College of Communication (COM) at Boston University is a large college with a department specializing in Journalism, as well as a department of Film & Television and a department of Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations. COM’s student population exceeds 2,000 annually, including undergraduates, graduate and PhD’s. The College integrates a strong liberal arts core with a heavy focus on preparing students for careers as communication professionals. Our faculty is a blend of traditional academicians and widely experienced professionals. Basic qualifications: A degree in journalism and at least five years of relevant professional or academic experience is required at time of application.
Additional qualifications: A strong record of professional accomplishment as a visual journalist including prior experience with newsroom practices. Must have prior experience teaching or mentoring at the graduate or professional level.
Preferred qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong leadership abilities and ability to collaborate. Experience with emerging forms of video and new media is also preferred.
