Research Scientist for the Willows Project School Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Department/Area Global Health and Population (GHP)

Position Description

The Willows Reproductive Health Research Project in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health invites applications from candidates for research scientist positions. The research scientist will conduct research and play a leadership role in evaluating the implementation and impact of Reproductive Health Programs in treatment and control sites in Ghana and Tanzania. The initial appointment is for three years. 

The successful candidate should be an expert in and work on the evaluation methods, including quantitative surveys particularly the community-based household interviews. She/he will contribute to the design and implementation of the survey questionnaires, IRB approvals, preparation of training materials for interviewers, training interviewers, fieldwork, data processing and quality control, analysis of management information system (MIS) data and survey data, and report writing.

In addition to working on the longitudinal and cross sectional surveys under the direction Principal Research Scientist Iqbal Shah and Professor David Canning in all sites, she/he will be primarily responsible for all project activities in one country (Ghana or Tanzania) and will oversee the work of a country research team.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field, such as global health, demography, economics, sociology, or epidemiology. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in research in program evaluation with expertise in one or more of: qualitative research methods, quantitative research methods, or process evaluation. Applicants should have a minimum two years of postdoctoral experience, evidence of ability to excel in research, and have made a major contribution to refereed publications, beyond thesis papers. In addition, she/he should provide evidence of leadership in scientific administration, including the supervision of research staff.

Additional Qualifications

Experience of primary data collection, particularly in the countries to be studied, and familiarity with reproductive health and family planning programs is highly desirable.

Special Instructions

These positions will be a term appointment for three years from date of hire with the possibility of renewal.
