The School of Biological Sciences

The University of Queensland has a vibrant research environment, attracting top grades in the national assessment of research quality in all biological disciplines.  The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia with 50 full-time academic staff.  The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences, marine biology, entomology, and genetics & evolution.

The role 

A full-time fixed term position for 2 years is available to undertake laboratory and glasshouse based research to improve understanding of the feeding behaviour of the soldier fly, Inopus rubriceps, and how feeding affects sugar cane host plants. The position, based in the School of Biological Sciences, will focus on the design and execution of behavioural bioassays and studies to determine the effects of root feeding on plant growth and development. Other duties include working with collaborators, liaising with sugar industry stakeholders and the preparation of research outputs.  The position is available for commencement from October 2017.

The person

Applicants will have a PhD in entomology/ ecology and demonstrated experience implementing experiments to investigate insect behaviour, preferably in the context of insect-plant interactions. A proven ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team is highly desirable as is the ability to communicate research findings to different audiences through oral presentations, written reports and scholarly scientific papers.


This is a full-time fixed term appointment at Academic level A for 2 years. The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545.80 - $87,535.13 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,408.59 - $102,416.10 p.a.).
