The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent reputation which has been built over many decades at The University of Queensland. The School’s project-centred curriculum was recognised recently as an international exemplar of engineering education. Worldwide, UQ Chemical Engineering was ranked in the top 16 worldwide in the 2012 QS rankings for chemical engineering and was the top ranking school in Australia. It was also given the highest score for chemical engineering in Australia in the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) study (2015).
Central to the School’s success are the staff, specifically the academic, research and professional staff. They are engaged in pioneering teaching and research crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries, mindful of their role in addressing the big challenges that lie ahead. The School is also a major research provider to broad engineering and materials fields including metallurgy. Close industry partnerships ensure this research is relevant and results in a robust balance of pure and applied research in the School. The successful applicant will work on a project aimed at the development of high strength steels suitable for high heat input welding. The microstructures of base metals will be refined by taking advantage of oxide metallurgy technology and accordingly the mechanical properties of high heat input welding joints will be improved, which will be verified based on the mechanical property tests. The second phase particles in steel will be characterised by SEM, EPMA and TEM available in UQ. You will also be involved in supervising postgraduate and honour students who will be working within the project.
Applicants for this position should possess a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or related field; a sound record in the development, planning and technical management and successful execution of research programs; ability to apply good interpersonal skills to team and individual issues; demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to, gender equity issues
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow should possess a demonstrated working knowledge of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics; experience in high temperature experimental studies of physico-chemical properties of materials; and strong record of achievement relative to opportunity in research of pyrometallurgy or a related field of high temperature research.

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at Research Academic level A for 12 months with possible extension (up to 3 years). The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545 - $87,535 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,407 to $102,416 p.a.).
