We are seeking to appoint a Programme Officer (Research Fellow) to work on the LINK programme which aims to improve the use of data to inform decision making for malaria control in Africa.
The programme is led by LSHTM in partnership with the INFORM (Information for Malaria) team, based in Nairobi, Kenya. LSHTM brings expertise in public health, malaria epidemiology, health systems research, policy development and management to support the use of epidemiological profiles developed by the INFORM team, which has technical excellence in the compilation of malaria data from diverse sources and the application of geospatial techniques. Together, LSHTM and INFORM will build and support the use of epidemiological profiles to provide new insights into malaria and to enhance evidence-informed decision making for better malaria control.
The Link Programme Officer (LPO), to be based in London, will work full time on the programme and act as an interface between the programme staff in London and Nairobi and key stakeholders across Africa. These will include National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) members, research groups, implementing partners and donors. The LPO will be supported to identify decision-makers and influences on them in order to understand relevant decision-making processes. The LPO will facilitate the identification and flow of data to the NMCP and INFORM teams, the development of comprehensive epidemiological malaria profiles and the dissemination and use of this information in the respective countries and sub-regions.
The LPO will have an MSc in epidemiology, public health, health systems, health economics or other relevant subject and first-hand experience of malaria control and operational research in Africa. The post-holder will have experience of involvement with national policy makers and programme implementers in endemic countries and an understanding of current issues in malaria control and its financing. In addition, the LPO will have proven abilities to manage competing work priorities to meet deadlines, to write technical reports and to communicate complex issues orally. Fluency in English will be essential, as well as willingness to travel extensively. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.
A PhD in public health/epidemiology/malaria or a related subject, and experience of medicine in Africa, fluency in French and/or another appropriate language, an understanding of policy processes and the political economy of health decision making in low income countries would be desirable. The programme is funded by the UK Government's Department for International Development for a period of 2 years and the post is available immediately. Salary is on the Academic Pathway Grade 6 from £37,477 to £42,560 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this, there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
