DIRECTOR, PLANNED GIVING

The Planned Giving Office at Boston University is a service organization providing information and expertise on the full array of planned gifts to internal and external clients. The department is comprised of six professionals responsible for generating and stewarding planned gifts for programs and Schools at Boston University. This team collaborates closely with the school based teams, as well as with principal gifts, leadership gifts and alumni relations. In creating a culture of heightened awareness of gift planning as a desirable funding option, the department is an important contributor to the long term strategic fund raising initiatives of the university.

JOB SCOPE

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Planned Giving, the Director will develop strategies and implement programs to expand planned giving through identifying, cultivating, educating and soliciting prospects for outright, planned and estate gifts in support of the Campaign for Boston University.  This position works closely with fundraising staff across the division in developing, planning and implementing a wide range of best practice fund-raising activities, strategies, programs, and priorities.  The Director will supervise two exempt staff and will assist school and region based gift officers with the development and execution of gift planning strategies; and facilitate the operation of the planned giving marketing efforts.

The Director of Planned Giving will develop and maintain personal contact with prospects for deferred gifts, including routine travel to key regions or donors and regular communications through other channels. Face-to-face donor activity is essential to the role, and the Director is expected to visit with more than 120 donors in each fiscal year. This position will also supervise, manage and mentor planned giving staff including an Associate Director and Assistant Director of Planned Giving. This role will work with AVP to set individual annual activity and performance metrics and ensure that staff is consistently working toward the achievement of such goals/metrics.

Working with the AVP in the development of best practices systems for all aspects of the planned giving functions and participate on department projects, e.g. prospecting and stewardship event planning, planned gift reporting, the Director will assist in the review and evaluation of proposed gift policies and procedures; make recommendations for improvements in the program. This position also includes developing strategies to promote and support planned giving initiatives for all schools, colleges, and departments of Boston University, as well as supporting regional gift officers in exploring planned giving opportunities with prospects, preparing planned gift proposals, participate in joint calls/visits. 

Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS

The Director of Planned Giving at Boston University will be an experienced and talented planned giving fund raiser with a successful track record of board management and engagement with prospects and donors for estate and bequest gifts. He or she will have the particular ability to develop and to execute strategy at both the departmental and prospect level and will be a proven planner and executor of those plans. A minimum of eight years of direct fund-raising experience with a proven track record of soliciting and closing planned gifts is required. Additionally critical is leadership experience in an institution of considerable organizational complexity typified by matrix relationships of power and influence. 

Candidates must have a bachelors’ degree; a masters is preferred, and more than eight years’ fundraising experience. Additionally, advanced written communications, analytical skills, collaboration, and project management skills are required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
