At Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP) there is a vacant Post Doc position in Seismic with focus on developing the theory and inversion algorithms of frequency dependent seismic response from heterogeneous reservoir of hydrocarbons. The position is for a three years’ period, funded by the Petromaks2 project through the Norwegian Research Council.

The Petromaks2 project is based on cooperation between NTNU and University of Edinburgh and focus on theoretical and technological aspects related to estimation of layering and fracturing properties of reservoir from frequency dependent seismic response. The post doc candidate will be working to develop the theory and inversion algorithms.

The results from this work should be published in international peer-reviewed publications and will comprise a study based on applications on real data examples. The main focus is expected to lie on wave propagation in complex media. Hence, the strong knowledge in mathematics and programming is required. Knowledge in seismic data processing is considered as an advantage.

The Department of Geoscience and Petroleum has a long history of research within applied seismics. The department has the project management for the Petromaks2 project.


In order to be considered for the post-doctoral position, the applicant must hold a PhD degree within geophysics or mathematics. Candidates working with relevant background from seismic data analysis will be preferred. Good written and oral English is a prerequisite.

Conditions of appointment

Postdoctoral Fellows are remunerated in code 1352, with minimum gross salary of NOK 485 700 per annum (before tax). There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regarding university employees.

Engagement as a Postdoc is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.
