Description of Work Unit

The Department of Sociology is dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline and profession serving the State of Colorado and the public good. We seek to stimulate and improve research, instruction, discussion, and outreach. We also encourage cooperative relations among those engaged in the scientific study of society. The department has a commitment to both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

Position Summary

This half-time Communications Coordinator position is for 3 years. The position will support the Sociology Department’s strategic communications needs. This is an Administrative Professional position. Responsibilities will include leadership of promotion and outreach of Sociology’s programs and activities, production and dissemination of communications, including the Department Newsletter, brochures and other print publications, design and maintenance of the Department webpage in coordination with CLA Communications and IT departments, management of the Department’s social media, and outreach related to student and faculty recruiting, alumni and development activities. In addition, this position will collaborate with communications coordinators across the college and within the Dean’s Office to enhance the messaging of the College of Liberal Arts.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Earned BA or BS degree in Sociology or related Liberal Arts field of study, technical communications, journalism, media studies, graphic design or related fields
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of employment and ability to meet Colorado State University’s vehicle use requirements
  • 1 year of experience developing marketing strategies and creating marketing materials for print and digital products, including text, graphical and visual data

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Project Management Duty/Responsibility

Design, create content, publish and manage bi-annual electronic Department Newsletter, based on information gathered about current student, faculty and Department activities and achievements.

In accordance with College of Liberal Arts common standards, coordinate with College Communications & IT staff to regularly update and maintain information and Department-managed layout on the Department of Sociology Website.

Based on information gathered about Sociology Department student, faculty and staff activities, develop and disseminate content for regular digital media and social media feeds.

Based on information gathered about Sociology Department undergraduate and graduate programs, teaching and research activities, develop and regularly update print and online versions of informational brochures suitable for student and faculty recruiting, alumni and donor communication purposes.

Percentage Of Time 60% Job Duty Category Research and Collaboration Duty/Responsibility

Meet with and interview Sociology faculty, staff, students and alumni to develop and place content in Department communications outlets, including website, print and electronic publications, and social media.

Coordinate with CLA and CSU communications staff to ensure cohesive, consistent Sociology Department messages and promotion in accordance with College and University standards and policies.

Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Planning and Development Duty/Responsibility

In consultation with the Department Chair and CLA Communications staff, develop and execute communication plans appropriate for student and faculty recruitment, Department activity and program information dissemination, alumni and donor communications

In consultation with the Department Chair, provide communication-related input to Department strategic planning for current and future program development

Percentage Of Time 10% Job Duty Category Outreach Duty/Responsibility

In coordination with Department Chair and Department Support Staff, support planning and management of outreach events, coordinate production of video content.

Other communication-related duties as assigned
