Job Description

The Clinical Examiner will be a licensed dental hygienist who serves as a member of the research team for the multisite NIH funded project, Integrating Interactive Parent Text Messaging and Oral Health Guidelines into Pediatric Community Health Centers to Reduce Early Childhood Caries The primary responsibility of the Clinical Examiner (CE) is to review medical histories and perform oral health assessments to collect clinical caries data (primary research outcome) for children aged 0 to 6 years who are participating in the study. The CE is also responsible for devising a written report indicating each childs oral health status and need for dental treatment.

Required Education: Registered Dental Hygienist who has the capabilities to participate in a research study Preferred Education: Registered Dental Hygienist with an Associates degree The Clinical Examiner (CE) will be conducting oral health assessments and applying fluoride varnish on children ages 0 to 5, residing in Boston Public Housing and participating in the study.

The primary purpose of the research study is to test the effectiveness of a multimodal community-based intervention to reduce the incidence of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) The CE will be responsible for the following tasks and skills; Expected to use, maintain, and transport portable equipment and dental supplies Good communication skills for interacting with clinic managers in pediatric clinics and caregivers Able to converse in Spanish is preferable, but not required Knowledge of behavior management technique, such as distraction; tell-show-do; positive reinforcement; and/or a combination of these techniques in order to perform oral health assessments for very young children Able to follow proper infection control and disinfection and sterilization protocols for autoclave use The CE will be required to travel to various pediatric clinic sites in order to conduct oral health assessments on study subjects. Hence, a private means of transportation, such as a car is preferable.
