The Institute of Dentistry (IoD) has been conducting internationally recognised research in oral and dental sciences for more than a century. It is the top rated UK Dental School for quality of dental research, as assessed in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and is currently ranked 1st in the Complete University Guide and 2nd in the Guardian League tables (2018). In 2014 the new £78 million Royal London Dental Hospital and QMUL Dental School opened, incorporating some of the most technologically advanced dental facilities in the country.

The IoD is one of six Institutes in the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), located primarily on our Whitechapel site. It is comprised of five academic centres, employs more than 170 staff (circa 77 FTE) and currently offers two undergraduate and 12 postgraduate taught programmes, with a combined cohort of circa 500 students. With unrivalled heritage, a truly diverse clinical population and state of the art facilities, it continues to deliver the highest quality training to our undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers and staff.
