Description of Work Unit

The Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability is an interdisciplinary ecology research and teaching unit at Colorado State University that offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in the discipline of watershed science, as well as an undergraduate program in ecosystem science and sustainability. Our mission is to improve understanding of the complex interactions between ecosystems, humans, and management activities.

Position Summary

Colorado State University requires cooperative technical expertise in geospatial technologies to support enterprise data management and tools at the National Park Service (NPS) to deliver data for the public and the NPS staff. These data and services will support greater research and understanding of park’s resources by the general public.

This position will provide knowledge of technological advances in GIS, be able to provide new ideas to better the development of data and data access tools for the public and the parks along with collaboration among other researchers. The field of enterprise data and data delivery is changing rapidly. This positon will tap into the most current research related to open source web mapping protocols, data delivery technologies, and social media. This position, along with the Principal Investigator, will work with the CSU Geospatial Centroid network. The network provides a hub of information exchange related to GIS technologies. This position will also present their experiences in data management and issues within the federal sector to other students, professions, and researchers at the University to influence their research and project work.

This position will be based at the National Park Service office in Lakewood, Colorado.

Required Job Qualifications

Masters in Geography, GIS, Planning, Natural Resource, Cultural Resource, Environmental Monitoring, Cartography or a closely related field, or a Bachelor’s with minimum 3 year experience in GIS.
Minimum of 2 years experience in ArcGIS and related software/extensions.
Minimum of 1 year experience with sound data management practices, such as data organization, geodatabase implementation, and metadata documentation.
Minimum of 1 year experience in combined skills of data collection, data conversion, data rectification, data analysis, integration into a standard directory structure, and using or managing data in a File Geodatabase and/or Spatial Database Engine.
Ability to pass a federal Security Assurance Check.
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing as well as the ability to develop collaborative relationships and work closely with others.
Knowledge of MS Access and/or relational databases.
Experience in cartography and creating high-quality map products.
Experience with GPS hardware and software and field data collection techniques.
Experience in web mapping and web services.
Knowledge of the theory, use, and application of GIS and related technologies.
Knowledge of and ability to interpret ecosystem, social processes and geographic relationships and apply them to planning, compliance, cultural resources, natural resources, facilities and other program areas using GIS analysis.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Data Management Duty/Responsibility

Use ArcGIS software for various deliverables and analysis. Conduct data collection from various sources, satellite imagery, aerial photography and/or other remotely sensed data. Conduct data retrieval. Manage databases. Conduct data manipulations and data analysis. Design and develop appropriate data output, including paper maps, tables, graphics, and reports. Develop and/or work with data models, data layers, and attribute standards.

Position will perform GIS analyses such as buffers and viewsheds. Use GIS data for analysis or modeling of environmental or sociological conditions (numerous factors identifying a proposed protection area or management action). Provide GIS analysis in support of compliance or planning efforts or natural and cultural resource management. Position will use GIS data for analysis of modeling geographic conditions such as utilities, concessions, interpretation, law enforcement, or other program areas.

Position will deliver presentations in both informal and formal settings. Position will work with a team to write professional reports, studies, or plans. Position will work and coordinate with others in different organizations and different disciplines.
