PhD Candidate in Optimal Design and Operation of Arctic Transportation Systems
There is a temporary position available at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management as PhD Candidate in Optimal Design and Operation of Arctic Transportation Systems for a period of three years. PhD Project: Decision support for Arctic transportation systems
This PhD position is part of the NTNU’s pilot programme on Arctic marine environment addressing risk, reliability and ice data in the Arctic. The project is funded by, and carried out in collaboration with NTNU Oceans, one of NTNU’s strategic research areas.
As ice conditions in the Arctic are changing, the region becomes more accessible. Industrial activity, e.g. the exploitation of natural resources such as hydrocarbons and ores, is expected to increase leading to an increased demand for shipborne transportation both from and to the Arctic. A major research question of this project is how to ensure an acceptable safety level for these activities given the poor knowledge about the physical marine environment (mainly ice data) in the High North.
Area of Research
This project’s focus is on providing decision support for designing and operating maritime transportation systems for the Arctic. Both strategic, tactical and operational problems are of interest, e.g. fleet size and mix decisions or routing of vessels. Providing appropriate decision support requires considering the impact of uncertainty connected to varying ice conditions on design and operations from a few days ahead to several years into the future. The methodology will be mainly based stochastic programming, but other methods such as robust optimization or simulation may be considered as well. Theoretical development and applied analysis are both part of this project.
Applicants have to address strictly the following selection criteria:
- A highly motivated candidate with a high-grade (minimum character B) Master's degree within operations research or optimization.
- High level of personal responsibility, initiative, and ability to work in a project team.
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
- Willingness and ability to communicate and work together with technical subject matter experts
- Ability to work independently and to take initiatives.
- Experience with stochastic programming, integer programming, maritime transportation or transport systems
- Experience with or formal education in economics.
- Excellent communication skills with both technical and administrative staff.
- Knowledge of written and spoken Norwegian.
Salary and Working Conditions
The PhD position is paid according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, minimum gross NOK 36 025,00 per month, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.
